Good morning, I have a 48 h converted to 12 volt. The starter spins free but will not engage the ring gear. I can see the teeth on the ring gear are worn on the leading edge but are intact. Can i fix this or should I buy a rebuilt starter. Thanks for the help.

Jim, I took the starter apart and it does not appear the bendix spring is broken. I bought this tractor 3 years ago and bendix looks to have been replaced recently. I put the starter back together and istalled and still wont engage. Do you still think it is the bendix they want $70 for a new one.

If turning the engine to a new location on the ring gear does no good, (and the starter is making the very bad grinding noise (like the engine was already running) then I believe cleaning and lubing the drive should work (at a new location on the flywheel) If it is just free wheeling like no teeth are trying to mesh, it may be a low battery, bad cables, or the starter is in need of a set of brushes and bushings.
Pull the starter out and connect the big lead to it from the starter switch. Use a jumper cable to ground the frame of the starter to the frame of the tractor. Hold onto the starter with two pair of vice grip pliers, because when it is energized, it will jump dramatically. While holding onto it, and watching the drive pinion, have someone hit the starter button (briefly) The pinion should fly out to the end of the shaft and scare the boogers out of you in the process. If it just starts to spin and goes faster and faster (not too violent) it needs to be repaired. JimN

Jim, Is there any way to temporarily fix this. I have a few yards of topsoil to move.

Well for some odd reason most of the time when you shut and engine down it stops in the same place. So the start hitting the same place on the ring gear over and over again which of course it hard on that one area. Some times turning the engine a half turn will let the starter engage and if that works then you can at least use the tractor

A 4 cyl engine stops in 2 different places. Turn the engine 90 degrees not 180.

If the starter spins instantly (the battery is good and cables are well connected), the only two possible answers are to crank start, or pull start the tractor. DOn't pull start it if not experienced. or Taking the starter out and cleaning the existing drive in solvent, and putting a spray lube on it (if broken parts are found, a new drive is the answer) I like a spray that contains PTFE like TiiFlow. Fix it.
I would put a new drive pinion on the starter. CaseIH has a new design clutch type drive that solves several issues of similar nature. It looks different, but works better. replace the bushings while in there. JimN
