Hi, my 1066 has sloppy steering due mainly to wore spindle to steering arm splines. I tried the undersized arms, they worked for a while but are already getting looser after just 500 acres or so.. I have seen the tapered spindle kits, they are high $$ but if I need all new stuff anyway are they the way to go? Any opinions? Thanks for the help.

I fought this one 30 years ago. If your going to spend that much money, I'd put 24" or 28" front tires with and industrial king pin front end. Too small front tires for that much weight and hp is your problem. I know 4x4 would be better, however the large tires will make the tractor turn better under load.

You look at most of the 100 hp + tractors sold since 1990, all 4x4 and 24" or larger front tires. Not only do they roll much nicer on rough surface, but they smooth the ride in the seat.

You have one more step you can do before the tapered arm kit.

Make sure the spindle bushings and thrust bearings arre in good shape. Install the arm and nut as tight as you can. Make sure you haved the arm where you want it. Weld a bead completely around the nut, welding it to the top of the spindle. Weld the bottom outside of the nut to the arm.

Your arms are already worn out along with some wear on the splindle splines. If in the future you want to go to the tapered arm kit, grind off the welds and get a new nut. There will still be enough good threads on the splindle to use a new nut.
