Our M Farmall motor is locked up. Anyway to unlock the motor? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would pull the head and remove all the water from the top of the pistons. If there's a lot of rust in the cylinders I would run a cylinder hone
into each cylinder to remove the rust. Then pour
ATF into each cylinder and let it soak. If all the wheel rocking and starter bumping doesn't free the pistons I would drain the oil and remove the oil pan and loosen all the bearing caps. I would remove one of the rod caps and use a piece of 2X2 oak and a big hammer and tap on that rod to drive out the piston. I did this on an A Farmall, but I pulled the engine and I had the pistons out the same day I got the tractor. Several pistons came out with the sleeves. Some heat from a torch freed the pistons from the sleeves. I only needed the old rods for a new sleeve kit. The crankshaft didn't look too great. but it only needed to be polished and needed .002" undersize bearings. Here's a picture
of the A taken in 1976. Hal

It sat a year, then the motor was locked up. We tried rocking it with no luck.

Mez, either your pistons are stuck or maybe the valves are. Has any water gotten into it. If so probably the pistons. You might try taking the plugs out and putting a half a cup of ATF in each cylinder. Put the plugs back in if it is still outside. Let it sit for a week or so and try rocking it again. You may have as good a luck by putting a good battery on it and bumping it with the starter every once in a while. Opinions vary on this, but if it were mine I would pull the head and see what is wrong and more than likely since it has been a year put a new engine kit in it. If water has gotten in it you will likely need new sleeves and pistons.

Old has the answer. Make sure the cylinders are free of water, then pour in (the spark plug holes) a quarter cup of Automatic trans fluid in each hole. get a new battery (charge/test the old battery, and after it sits at least a week, begin bumping the starter (do not hold it, just bump the switch repeatedly) maybe 6 to 8 times, then roch it in high gear some, then wait a few more days. If yoy have a crank for the snout on the front, using a 80 to 100# weight on the crank while it is sticking out horizontal will add torque to the saft and assist. If after two weeks (or longer if you are inclined) it will be necessary to tear it down to extract the pistons. If it had no rain cap or can on the muffler, this is probably going to be the case. Best of luck and keep us in the loop with reports. JimN

Need more info to really be able to help. What where you doing when it locked up or has it sat for a few weeks etc. Common problem is the starter locking in the flywheel but if it has been run low on oil or has sat for a few months then thats another story. If its looked from sitting fill the cylinders with tranny fluid. Blow out the cylinders first because if it got water into them you need to remove the water first.

If it was AOK a day or two ago and now it won't start I'll bet the starter is bound up. Our M will do that once in a great while. You might be able to rock the machine in high gear to get it loose, but most of the time we had to pull the starter loose to get the starter drive to release. More info is needed though. Not running for a number of years is another matter entirely.

Tell us much more, so we can make it operational again. If it was being started, and it will no longer turn over, the fix is to put it into high gear, and rock the devil out of the tractor forward and back. this motion releases a jambed starter. (so does looesning the bolts, but this is us ally much quicker. Letus know the circumstances. JimN

Not clear whether it was running and is now stuck, or whether you got it that way.
