I am rebuilding my 400 D water pump and would like to know how many rings of packing are required to seal the shaft. Also should the packing be greased ahead of time or is pumping in grease thru the zerc after installing the packing rings ok?
Thanks
John

I use 1/8" packing off of a roll. I grease the shaft before sliding it through the bushings. Also make sure the mating surfaces on the impeller and the bottom end of the center tube are faced off true.

You should have enough packing to put tension on the shaft when the brass gland is tight, and still have room for the notch in the top of the shaft to fit the cross bar. If you are using the rope type and not the pre cut I usually put in around 19 inches.

Kevin,
Thanks for the info.I have precut packing so if I do the math correctly, I will need 6 to 7 pieces. Does this sound about right? Also do you use the plain packing or do you use packing which has teflon or graphite imbedded in the "rope". Is 1/4" the correct size?
Thanks,
John
