I have just bought a 1955 Cub with a 42" Woods belly mower. I was told to mow in 2nd gear full throttle if the grass is not to tall, Does this sound correct? I have tried it and it seems to cut ok ,but it sure does seem like I am not moving very fast. Thanks

I don't want to spoil the enjoyment you will get from your Cub, but if you really want to accomplish something mowing with an older Farmall, you will soon want the next size larger model, the A/SuperA/100/130/140. It is only about 20% larger than a Cub and has a minimum of twice the horsepower. I also tried mowing with a Cub - 20 years ago. (A box turtle could crawl faster.) I sold it. When I went back into older Farmalls a few years ago, I started looking for a Super A or 140, remembering the lack of power in the Cub. mike

1st 2nd & 3rd go 2 1/8, 3 1/8, and 6 1/2 mph for a cub. 3rd gear is too fast.

Compare to a 140 (not hiCrop):
1,2,3,& 4th = 1.9, 3.7, 4.8, & 12.8 mph. Mowing in 2nd works good for me on a 140 with larger tires (12.4 vs 9.5) at about 4 mph.

That's probably about it with a Cub. Not much power, so wide open throttle is needed to keep the blades up to speed, First gear is even slower, Third gear is probably too fast.

The cub is underpowered compared to others.
2nd gear is good and low for heavy grass.
