I have a 1951 Farmall C that I am working on. It had set for a long time but engine was free. I put a new set of points and condenser in and found out I had fire at the plugs. I pulled the tractor and got it started after about 50 foot however it was running really bad.I then decided to remove the spark plugs and regapped them and figured out that the sparkplug wires were in the wrong order based on the firing ordere found on the side of the engine which is 1,3,4,2. I put the wires in order assuming the front of the engine (towards the radiator is one. Now I pull the tractor and it wont fire at all. I still have spark at the plugs and am getting gas to the carb. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. When I pull the tractor I am getting gas comeing out of the exhaust pipe.

Let's see here... It ran before, then you went and switched the spark plug wires all around and now it won't run...

Put the plug wires back and it will run at least as good as it did before.

Instead of playing Chinese-fire-drill with the plug wires, unhook them ONE AT A TIME from the distributor cap while the tractor is running (you shouldn't get shocked) and listen to see if the engine runs better or worse. When you pull a wire and the engine runs the same, it's not firing on that cylinder. Check all four cylinders.

The cylinders are 1-2-3-4 starting in front.

Why change the wires when it ran first. They were in the right order or it wouldnt have ran. Now that you say they are correct it wont run at all so they must have been ok at the first. Sounds like the mag or the dist has been reinstalled incorrect. So they changed position of the wires on the cap to get it to run. Pull all plugs turn engine over with the crank till #1 is on top dead center then see where the rotor lines up on the cap. Mite have to remove the dist or mag and turn it 180 deg then #1 will line up on the cap.

Well first off if it sat for a long time you probably have stuck rings which is a problem in its self. Put about a 1/2 cup of tranny fluid in each cylinder to lube it up and unstick the rings. Then find out where TDC is on #1 and recheck the firing order. On some you can drop the distubutor in any place so #1 on the cap will not be where it should be but thats no big deal beacue it will run at any point if you just know which one is set up as #1

This is just a guess Greg. I would say it is 180 out of time. When we got my dads old C the plug wires where in the wrong order. Someone had got it bad out of time and instead of timeing it they switched the wires around. It would run but rough. It would belch flames and blow oil out of the breather. These old girls are easy to time. Bring the #1 cyl up to top dead center on compression stroke. You can pull the front plug and have someone turn the motor over while you hold your thumb over the hole. You will feel a rush of air when it is comeing up on compression. You can look in the hole with a light and see the top of the piston and look through the inspection hole under the clutch houseing and the timeing mark {hard to see sometimes} should be lined up on the flywheel. When your sure it is on TDC compression pull the dist cap and the rotor should be pointing at the #1 post of the cap. If it is not you may have to pull the mag or dist depending on what you have and adjust it till its pointing the rotor at #1. This should get you close to a running machine. But since the plug wires where in the wrong order this would be my best guess to try. I'm sure others with more wisdom than I will jump in here soon.
Paul

The wires should start with one on the top right tower as looking toward the front of tractor and go clockwise. Lots of these dist caps have a 1 right below that tower.

If it is a mag my book shows that # 1 is in the 1o'clock position with #3 in the 5 0'clock position, number 4 at 7 oclock and #2 at 10 oclock looking toward the front. of the tractor from the seat area. Hope that right.

That would be one at the top right tower and so on.
