Farmall 230 Clutch Problems

I replaced the clutch in my F230 a year ago and didn't know to remove the three wire clips, The adjusting bolts on the clutch fingers were screwed all the way in on the reman clutch I installed. A month ago Tractor started growling when clutch was pushed in and wouldn't shift unless the engine was slowed way down and then depress clutch and shove in gear , sometimes grinding some times not. I split the tractor and removed the clutch and found the twisted up clips which I then removed. The clutch and press. plate all looked OK so I reinstalled and put 230 back together. I can feel clutch pedal pushing the fingers in but I cannot shift into gear, it just grinds. If I start it ingear with clutch depressed away it goes! Help! Is my clutch wore out even though it did not look it? Is there any way I can adjust fingers or are they all ready maxed out? Any insight will be greatly appreciated!!

Yeoman Farmer: Lets go back to the beginning, what exactly did you replace when you installed the clutch? You said new presure plate, and I assume clutch disc. But did you replace both the release bearing and the pilot bushing? Until we know that, we are only guessing what could be wrong.

If the release bearing was new in 2006, very unlikely that is the problem. The linkage to the release bearing could be screwed up. I've seen the release bearing holder turn 1/4 turn on linkage and linkage will touch presure plate almost at point of clutch release. The linkage touching presure plate will growl, maybe even twist up the linkage. You can see this problem from the lower inspection hole. Best to watch it with someone on clutch and another on hand crank.

Now, if release bearing was new in 2006, and if the linkage is in good shape, and I include in that linkage all three fingers hitting release bearing at same time, clutch adjustment should eliminate the problem. If not then the problem has to be pilot bushing.

If you didn't replace the release bearing and pilot bushing, then you best split the tractor.

Dear Hugh, Thanks for the reply. I replaced clutch and press. plate last year, that's all. The round brass looking bearing on the clutch pedal linkage was greased and looked good yesterday so I didn't replace. How do I know if the pilot bushing is bad or not? The 3 fingers looked OK And I adjusted the clutch linkage so there was no free play at all and there is still no clutch at all, just grinding gears. The IH mechanic said over the phone that he thought was the clutch but I still am not sure.Thanks!

Yeoman Farmer: Watch through the inspection hole as someone else depresses the clutch. As the linkage moves forward watch to see that it activates the 3 fingers evenly. When the clutch is fully depressed and if the linkage is not touching presure plate and all functions worked as they should, then engage the pto, keeping the pedal depressed. All this with tractor not running of course. If you can't turn the pto by hand, the pilot bushing has to be the culpert. Have your friend put a pipe wrench on the pto shaft, as you watch through the clutch inspection hole. As he turns you should be able to see what is draging. The pilot bushing is the only item you can't see

I'm also assuming you didn't do something stupid like I did once. I was changing the clutch in my 130, same basic set up. Just as I had wires, fuel line, hydraulic lines, etc. all undone, in walk three helpful friends. In 1 hour 25 min, we had split the tractor, installed all the new parts, and had it back together, ready for me to hook up wiring etc. In the end I could not get clutch adjustment or release. One of my good friends had picked up the clutch disc and laid it down opposite side up, while I was out at truck getting my new parts. This caused me to put the clutch disc in backwards. Next time it took me 4 hours all by myself, however I took time to make sure it was right.

My brother has a 230, and just last year he had the pilot bushing bind up. Tractor hadn't been apart for 10 years. His clutch was working well, and while plowing snow he noticed shifting problems, particularly after tractor had been left idling in neutral. The pilot bushing alone cured his problems. I personally never had a pilot bushing give trouble on these smaller tractors. The big tractors have pilot bearngs and I have had those bind up.

Yeoman Farmer: Just to clarify, the phrase, "What I'm banking on", if everything works perfect, you should be able to turn shaft bare handed, but it wont turn right easy. The slightest snag will cause you to get a pipe wrench. I assume your not a Charles Atlas.

Yeoman Farmer: You'll notice the hub of the clutch disc extends out further on one side. If you place a straight edge across clutch disc surface this is very noticable, although you can see it just holding the disc on edge in front of you. The short side of hub faces the flywheel.

I'm banking on you not being able to turn that shaft with one bare hand. Lets face it, you don't have mechanical advantage, more like mechanical disadvantage would be the order of the day. With clutch tied down, pto in gear, transmission in neutral, you'll be turning everything, pto, transmission top shaft, shaft to clutch and the clutch disc. Not only is that a lot to turn, given what you have to grab hold of. Going backwards through the pto, power train will have close to a 3 to 1 speed increase. Your going to be turning the top shaft all the way to and including clutch disc 3 times the speed of the pto shaft you have grip on.

When you get it working perfect, try turning the pto shaft by hand with pto engaged and clutch tied down for 20 minutes steady, then write me an e mail, telling me how your arm feels.

The IH repairman told me to set the clutch pedal to where there was no freeplay and see if I had any clutching power. I did that and proceeded to snap off 2 of the three clutch fingers. $245 later and a new clutch and press. plate and I am back in business. I think my problem came from a year ago when I replaced both of these, I don't recall setting the freeplay on the clutch pedal as the manual strongly commanded. Anyway, thank y'all for the prompt replies and suggestions. It was a blessing! My next need is how to wire the 12 volt alternator up so I can quit hooking up a battery charger every few days. It's been converted to 12v but the wires came undone and I am NOT an electrician. It is a Chevy alt. Thanks!

Lever height on the pp fingers is 2 and 3/8ths inches.

Pilot bearing is a possibility, but it sounds like a classic bad throwout bearing to me. Especially that growling noise, and that part about the fingers going in but not disengaging.

Could be the adjustment on the clutch fingers, and you should check that out while yuo've got her split, but my money's on the throwout bearing or the linkage to it.
