To Polarize the genny use a piece of jumper wire etc to momentarily flash jump the VR's BAT and ARM/GEN terminals together and you ought to get a small spark. Bad or dirty VR contacts could affect performance but NOT the ammeter to consistently register bass ackwards as you explained UNLESS they are like totally bad/burned/stuck and she isnt working at alllll lllll ,,,,, ,, that still sounds like the polarity is reversed,,,,, or it got swapped at some time but the ammeter leads werent reversed,,,,, ,, or else the genny is polarized opposite from your battery connection. Some people rap the VR with a hammer to try n unstick VR relay points but thats not the best method, better to free them up manually then try n clean/buff/polish them n see what happens. Try to polarize and insure the ammeter is wired correct then if necessary clean/buff/polish up the VR's contacts..... .. Check belt tightness and for a good ground connection on BOTH the Genny and VR. John T
