Hey Bob when I bought my old H it had a 12v batt in it and the charging system didn't work at all. I had the Gen rebuilt and put a 6v bat + ground back in it. It never has charged a lick. I have just been charging the batt once a month or so. I noticed when mowing Friday the fan belt was very loose. Since it was only about 100 in the shade on Sunday I thought I would work on it. After much work and oil I got that old pulley to loosen up to where I could tighten the belt up. Fired her up and looked and my Amp meter was at approx 8 to the + side. I was pumped. Then just for grins I thought I would turn my light switch from L to H and the meter deflected all the way to the - side. Now I cant get it to show anything at all agian. I have the regulator with three post on it so I didn't expect moving the light switch to have any effect. I have a copy of your trouble shooting chart just didn't know if you might have a word of wisdom for me.

Hey Paul - A few thoughts:

Make sure BOTH the fan and gen belts are snug and grease-free. A slipping generator belt can cause the generator to charge intermittently or not at all. (My tractors have this problem sometimes when the belts are wet from heavy rain or power washing).

Double check your wiring. Turning the light switch from L to H should have no effect whatsoever if your tractor now has a regulator installed.

Double check the regulator is solidly grounded.

Check also the ammeter is reading correctly (should show discharge when you turn on the lights with the engine stopped). If it's reading backward you'll need to swap the wires at the two ammeter terminals.

Wouldn't hurt to polarize the generator again once you are certain the ammeter is reading correctly.

----

Hope this helps. Note: I'm gonna be away from the computer for the next few days. If you're still having problems perhaps John T can add more...

Bob

Thanks Bob, I'll give those things a try. I may have to run some new wire. When I got this tractor the last owner had taken the lights off it so his 12v bat wouldn't cook the bulbs. I may need to run new wire and hook them back up.
