I just got a Farmall M and I went to change the oil filter and noticed that the Filter was dry. What makes the oil go to the filter. I only ran it off the trailer and into the shed so I hope I didnt hurt it to bad. What do I fix.

Did it have oil pressure when you ran it?? The Purolator (oil canister) usually has no oil in it when you remove the filter because when the engine is shut off, the oil drains back into the pan. Is the filter black from the old oil?

The oil filter on an M is not a full flow filter. Only a percentage of the oil goes tru the filter. As the others have said you have somthing plugged on the oil filter assembally. You still have oil pressure to the engine parts that need it but the oil is not being filtered.

That is just the way they are when you stop engine most of the oil runs out of filter and back into oil pan not an ideal design but they have survived a long time this way.

Well... The filter looks like its new. it has no oil on it at all. I thought that it could be the oil pump, put the gauge says the pressure is good. I have changed oil in an M before and there was oil in the filter when I did it. I dont think there should be much, but i think after running it, the filter should at least look like it had oil in it. Thanks for any help.

On the long bolt that holds oil filter case on, There's a small orfice hole if it gets pluged it will keep oil from circulating. If thats not it, oil flow to filter is from near where oil pressure line port is so the problem would be in a close area to filter and I would unbolt base and look for problem.

Your oil pan is full of crud, the oil passages in the base are probably the same way. Get new gaskets from Case-IH for the pan and filter base, remove the pan and base and clean them.--Although, I have never heard of the situation you have.
