I have recently been rebuilding my 6 volt generator. Renewed field winding covers, brushes and bearings but when i assembled it i found that it turned ccw but as everybody can tell me farmall 100/a/av so on turn cw from pully end. Is there some way of identifying the type of fields i have as i have seen them listed CCW or CW and change mine to type i need?

Not to worry! Simply repolarize the generator once you've got it installed and wired back up on the tractor and you'll be all set.

(Generator field widings are not rotation sensitive. Rather field polarization, and the polarity of power applied to a generator will determine the direction of armature rotation when "motoring" a generator on the bench.)

Some generators have brushes set in holders which do not allow the reverse operation (most delcos I have had apart are fine. Some have 3 sided brush holders and the brush can chatter and break when run backwards. Just the Idea that mechanical issues may make this not always true. Fan vanes on the front pulley (if equipped will also be wrong) JimN

Indeed Jim! Many generators have the brushes angled (also when equipped, the pulley fan blades angled) to optimize them for one direction of rotation.

Also 3 brush generators (which most of the old 6 volt generators are...) do not work well if spun the reverse direction.

I am fairly sure it doesn't matter, because you can easily switch these old tractors from positive ground to negative ground by swapping battery cables, swapping ammeter cables, and repolarizing the generator.

Once you put the generator on the tractor and get it wired up, you just need to polarize it so it charges properly.
