H front wheel bearings

I"m replacing front wheel bearings on a Farmall H and find that the inner bearing cup (right wheel) does not fit tightly in the wheel hub. The old bearing cup was loose and the new one is no better. You can turn the bearing cup within the hub and there is slight play in it. So, the hub must be worn. This right front wheel does wobble in 5th gear. I assume this is the cause. Do I have options - or do I have to replace the hub? If I need a hub, where would I get that?

Depends on where you are but in South Central TN/North Central AL hubs are plentifull in salvage yards and will come a lot cheaper than having yours fixed at machine shop.

Sounds like the hub is wobbled out to me also. If I were fixing it I would weld up the inside of the hub and then turn it back out to original dimensions so standard bearings will work. Tallperson

Have the hub machined on that surface for the next larger size OD bearing cup in that sequence (might be metric) of machine out the bore an eight, and machine a press fit sleeve into the hub, then machine it to original spec. JimN

If you need a band aid fix you might try this: Using a small diameter "nylon" rope, pull a strand or two from it, place the cup in the hub about 1/3 of the way, wrap enough strands of the rope (packing between the hub and the cup) to take up the slack. Drive the cup into the hub. Continue to pack strands of the rope untill all slack between the hub and cup is eliminated ( Pack it hard). Assemble the rest of the parts and forget it. The nylon will keep the hub from spinning and will take the heat, grease, etc for a long time. There is not much pressure on the cup if you can keep it from spinning and the bearing is good. I've done it and it works. Bob

Alan, After reading your post again I see that the cup is turning in the hub therefore you would have to put the punch marks in the hub until it took up the slack. This probably won't work if it is worn badly but if the hub is shot what do you have to loose. Hope this helps. PUTTER

Thanks guys for your thoughts.
I'll switch this hub to the other side to see what happens.
Putter: I might try your idea first. Let me make sure I'm clear: I'm going to center punch the outside of this bearing cup evenly all around. This will create dimples on the outside that MAY make this fit snug in the hub - right?

Alan, No, if the race is turning on the spindle you center punch dimples in the spindle then put it on. Depends on how much slack you have, more slack more dimples. Try to keep them even. PUTTER

Alan, Something you could try if you don't want to change spindles is to take a center punch and put dimples under the race or cup evenly all around then press on the race. It has worked for me in the past. Putter

First take the other hub that runs true and put it on the side where you think has the wobble. In other words just change places with the hubs. This will tell whether the hub is bad or the spindle is bad. Should find a salvage yard somewhere to get parts. Sounds like the way you described the problem that your spindle is worn.

Boy, I dunno Gene.

If the cup is spinning in the hub, sure sounds like the hub is wobbled out.
