We have found a 39 M not far from home. We have several M's but we have never seen anything like this. The motor has a plate below the carb and it also has some bolts on the other side of the block. It has a 6772 DE cast into the block at the back on the right side. It runs good and the tractor is in good shape we just dont know what that motor is. Any help as to identify it would be appreciated. Thanks

I have no proof but I vote for a U6 power unit.

Like this one? This is on a 1940 H. Date codes match. It also has holes bored for distribtutor and dipstick and softplugs in the holes. Serial number matches the one on the tag. You tell me?

Yep, thats what this one is like. Any certain answer to what it is. The casting code is a K which would make it a 41.

I would say this is a replacement block. I have the same thing in one of my 39 m's. Look for a date code on the block. the date code on the one I have showes a letter F so guessing it was made in 1960. it also had the 2 bolts with a cap by the carb. also were the serial number should be there is nothing.Paul

Is that number cast or stamped where the number should be cast? Stamped, its an Ih repalcement engine.

If plate near carb has 2 bolts it could be the fuel pump rod opening such as used on power unit, track machines, replacement blocks and some other. I'm not going to rule out IH putting some that way in tractors but it wasn't the standard way. Need some more information about your question. From the 6772 DE (are your sure its not 6722 DE?) toward front of engine try to find a date code and then on to the right side near front try to find a serial # stamped in. The letters before serial # would determain if its a tractor block or other. If its a replacement block it may not have a serial #. I don't mess with early M very much so don't know for sure what year range the suffix DE would be on casting #. It is early block, not sure it was still in 39 when they got to DE though. That depends on what the 4 numbers is before the DE. They may be different from what I think.

Reckon it has been frozen and busted.? I have seen them patched by bolting plates to the side.

Maybe even a rod went through the block.

Pictures would certainly help in figuring this out.
