Tire question

This is putting the cart way before the horse, but I'm going to the auto parts place on base tomorrow for something, and I want to check on if, and how much I could get tractor tires, if at all. So, I have a few questions. I looked at the Miller tire website and saw Firestone and BF Goodrich which were between 300-400 bucks. But I'm not sure of the size or type I want.

First, this tractor will be spending a lot of time on the road, so I want something that will last a long time and not wear out.

Also, there are some that have a criss-cross patten, instead of the usual V lines.

For size, I like a thick tire, but not overly huge. I guess some of that depends on the rim width, right? So it's either 12.4 or 13.6. 11 inch rims come on the H? What looks best on them.

Thanks for any info. And DANG tires are expensive!!!!

Road wear will not be a problem until you start hauling the loaded 175 bushel manure spreader.

So just how much road miles do you think you are going as the tires on it will probbably last longer than you i have put on over 1000 miles on tractor rides and them old tires are holding up just fine. I would worry more about if the engine even runs and get the leaks fixed before worring about tires cause if it dont run you aint going anyplace.

I know Gene, and I'm with you on that. Like I said I'm just going to be at the place on my base today, so I wanted to ask them if they can get them, just so I know.

Problem with www.tiretown.com is they have great prices advertised - they just don't have any tires to sell at that price. A while back I tried to get some front tires from them, I went through 3 differant sizes of 16" (5.50,6.00, 6.50)front tires - none in stock and no idea when there would be any. Same story with 13.6 X 38 rears.

What kind of tires are those? What does "buffed" mean? Any idea?

Thanks

Buffed tires are manufacurers blems that didn't meet spec, and the tire brand name was buffed off. Sometimes the brand name was left on but a 'blem' was molded into the rubber. Gordo

Someone, probably close to you will have tires they took off theirs when installing new ones. Would be glad to get rid of them as old tractor tires are hard to get rid of. Put the word out on what you're looking for. David.

Mike, We have a fella we use over here in Illinois, and he can get firestone rears. He priced me a set of 10 -36 for 207 each. I think he carries the 38's at at less than 250. I would do some more shopping around. This fella works out of a shop at home and has 2 trucks he runs. my 2 cents. lee

Well if all your going to do with it is show it and drive it on the road I would go with turf tires. They are no good for real pulling in dirt etc. but will work good for roading a tractor and other then looks be just fine for lawn mowing and yard work. But of course an H would be an over size lawn mower but just think you could mow a 100X100 yard in less then 5 minutes so you will have lots of time to drink beer

"The look" has a lot to do with it, and turf tires don't fit that need.

My yard could be mowed in two passes with a woods belly mower, so that's not a viable option. :)

Well then I would go with a 13.6X38 so you have a wider foot on the road. Run them at 8-10 PSI so you put the most on the road so you get less wear.

Mike, I wouldn't go any larger than 12.4's. The H usually don't have the power for larger tires. I like the Firestone 23 degree field and road tires. They pull good and hold up fairly well on the road. 4 ply will be a little cheaper and you shouldn't need anything heavier. I run 13.6 Firestones 4 ply on my M and have won several tug pulls with them.

I think the ones with the ''V Lines'' look a lot better than the criss cross type, but I think the criss cross style is more like the original. Are these going on that new H of yours?

Well... maybe if I get it. The guy said it needed new tires, and I was going to the parts store tomorrow, so I figured I'd ask to get an idea of what it's going to cost me, and where the best deals can be found.

I want new tires, but I want some $100 a piece bargain too. :) hehehe
