I have a B hood brewing in the barrel right now. This is my first electrolysis rust removal project and I am nervous about leaving the battery charger on all night while I am at work. Does it hurt anything to just unplug the charger temporarily? Thanks

It won't clean it unless you leave it plugged up. I checked and cleaned both the part and scrap metal after two days. Makes it clean even better. Just keep the amperage at or under the charger rating. If pulling too much on 12V cut it back to 6V. If worried about the charger getting too hot cut it back to 6V at night. David.

Will not hurt at all. I would leave it plugged up though. It is not going to cause you any problems.

I think you will be happy with the results. If you have it, and can hit it with a pressure washer when you let is set for a couple days, all the old paint will peel off along with the blackstuff.

If you do that all your nice chiny clean parts will re-rust in those same places!

It will take a while to get them all cleaned up so just leave it plugged in. It WILL NOT damage the solid metal no matter how long you leave the part in the tank.

Yes, switching the charger off exposes your (partly) cleaned part to corrosion, so keep it switched on or remove part from the solution. The only hazard associated with electrolysis is that it gives off hydrogen gas and oxygen gas, which may form an explosive mixture. So do it outside ONLY. Ever heard of batteries exploding while being charged? Same phenomenon, same problem :-(

I believe that I read that the type of battery charger makes a difference. Dave

I don't think it would hurt to unplug it but I leave mine plugged in for 2 or 3 days with no problems or worries, so I would just recommend leaving it plugged in.
