jk: As I see it your question really didn't get answered. You said, " I didn't know M's ever had a fast hitch." And your right, the M or SM never had a fast hitch, not even and optional fast hitch.

What you saw in the Red Power add was a Super MTAD, actually I think those letters should go MDTA. These are a different chassis from M or SM, everything from engine back is basically 400, 450 or 560.

You don't read YT enough, lol. I thought by now everyone would know what an HTA or MTA was. IH built the MTA from a TA chassis, and all sorts of indenendant folks built HTA's from TA chassis.

Fast hitch was an option. They can still be purchased new for about $700.

Super MTAs did not come from the factory with fast hitch, but because they used the same rear end castings as the 400, all the mounting holes for the fast hitch are there. Many Super MTAs were retrofitted with fast hitch after the 400s came out in 1955.

If you are adding a fast hitch to a Super MTA now, you need one off a 450 or 560, or you need the 400's platform along with the fast hitch. The newer 450/560 type hitch does not have any special mounting requirements on the platform, but the older 400 type does.

Nat,

The early hitch can be mounted on a SMTA without the 400 lid. It just requires a little shade tree engineering and a junkpile.

The easiest way is to bolt a piece of 3/4" x 4" x 12" flatbar to the lid using longer lid bolts. Before bolting, drill and tap the threads for the bolts that hold on the rockshaft hinged mount.
