Farmall M to be changed back to manual steering

My '52 power steering pump is ruined so I decided to use my own muscles to steer the tractor (as we did with our Farmall H) since I can't afford a new pump. Has anyone converted the powersteering back to manual?

Here is what I plan to do:
1. remove pump, pump mounting bracket, reservoir, and belt
2. remove hydraulic lines to steering shaft unit and plug line holes.
3. drive as-is.

Since part of the steering shaft had to be cut when the powersteering was installed I plan to leave the unit in place (that is, between the shaft ends).

Does this sound like it will work. Is there a better way? Are there any un-cut steering shafts available?

Thanks

Allen

Is it a Charlynn pump? If it is and you are getting rid of the pump, will you sell the mounting bracket? I need the bracket.

I would keep the power steering at all costs. I used a pump from a 95 J.D. combine with two pressure outlets. This allowed me to have live hyd. to operate a loader(you want power steering with a loader!), a 3pt.hitch, remotes, ect. Or if you just want P.S. than get a used pumpfrom a pickup or car. Happy Steering! P.S. The time it will take to change the pump will not be as long as it will be to remove all the P.S. and remove, weld & true the shaft, and replace it. Armand

Take the steering unit off and get the shaft welded true and machined down on a lathe.

It will be IMPOSSIBLE to steer with the power steering unit in place. Been there, done that.

Junk power steering pumps off old cars and pickups are plentiful and inexpensive. Just get one to fix what you have and be happy with power steering. As you get older, your arms will thank you.

Will it be impossible even if the pump and hoses are removed? Does the unit at the steering column create the resistance?

Thanks for your assistance.

Nat2, I agree about keeping the power steering. I never had it on either of my M's. Then I got this 450 with it and man what a difference. I never paid much attention to the M until I drove the 450.

Try steering one a 4 row front mounted cultivator on it.

how about heading to the auto junk yard and see if you can find a pump that can be fabricated to fit in . a lot of the front wheel drive cars have small pumps with remote fluid resevoirs, shouldnt be too bad to fabricate. something like a gm 4 or 6 cylinder has a compact pump.

I've been told that the original Char-Lynn pump is the same that was used on just about every Ford truck equipped with power steering for several years.

Shafts should be available at salvage yards, or you can simply add a piece back to your shaft, and weld it up. I have a 350 that has had this done to it.

I have decided to check into restoring the power steering pump (Char-Lyn).

Does anyone know of the best source for rebuilt parts?

Are there any theory books on hydraulics? I"d love to learn more since hydraulics is such a big part of this old M.

Thanks.

Allen
