Sounds like an episode of the black sheep squadron outside 3 cropdusters going at once within a mile laying out fungicide.

Ah so thats what happens to my small garden. I didnt know it was them eating sweet corn, and tomatoes! Farmers are very smart folks! I didnt see any slugs yet tomatoes have been eaten just the same. Those traps are poisenless right? Then you have to add some to the bucket. I need to look into this.

I know why they came however. We have 3 acres line solid full of Rosasharen (sp?) Bushes. The humming birds love them, but so do those pesky beetles. They just hang off them. I could prob take 20 gallons a day off those. Im surrounded by farms out here in PA mountain land. Hey it might help if I use it like a super trap hehe. As soon as they bloom they are just covered. This year Ill have to take some active steps. Instead of just looking at them and shaking my head.

You guys have problems with tent catapilers too? I sure do. Cut every choke cherry off our property. They jsut breed in those things.

Yes, they eat the silks and the corn plant won't polinate.
I fight them with malithon where I can and traps. Each morning I empty the traps into a 5-gallon bucket. (They are not active during the cool of the night.) I put a little liquid malithon into the bucket of beetles and cover. In a day, they are all dead. Last year I killed over 50 gallons that way and have a good start towards that many this year. My theory is "The more I kill, the fewer that can reproduce!"

i mounted my traps on plastic drums, empty them once a week. can usually get 10-15 gallons of dead beetles in a week. i place them along fencelines away from the gardens and fruit trees

Had a Japanese beetle outbreak by me Sunday... Every year they attack without mercy and decimate my garden more so than the field crops. I was proactive this year.. 2 jap beetle traps and a healthy dose of Sevin 10 on the veggies, including the sweet corn. Looked last night and found 2 in the whole stand.

Those buggers will get on your sweet corn when it is silking and eat the silk right off of the ears which in turn doesn't allow it to pollinate and you end up with less than full ears.

They enjoy your tomato and pepper plants also...

In central Illinois, the "Dusters" are busy spraying insecticide (Malithon) to protect the $4 corn from Japanese Beetles.

Hi, I didn't know those pesky things were a threat to corn, what kind of damage do they do?

Chuck46, like the others have said, they love the silks off corn. Even if it has pollinated rain will then get into the husk and rot the top part of the ear.

last year the lil devils by us would eat the silks right off the ears, then start eating the husk back and then the kernels. theyd ruin about 1/2 of the ear. we sprayed, they moved over to the soybeans, started chompin on them too. who ever brought them into this country needs a good swift kick in the hind-end. i lost close to 4 acres of black rasberrys too, they stripped everything in less than a week. they will also strip vegetables, fruit trees, and flower beds too.
