Radiator Woes

I have had an F-20 waiting to be worked on for quite a while which I have slowly picked away at over time. One of the items I knew had to be addressed was a leaking radiator, primarily around the bottom of the core. Upon disassembly and gradual cleaning of the various pieces I discovered that some (around 10-12) of the tubes near both sides have a gradual bubbling to modest leak on the ends where they penetrate the end plates when I shoot the hose close up under fair pressure at the cooling tubes in the front or back faces. Some of them seem to be leaking through the tube, most of the rest seem to be bubbling through around where the tube meets the plate, either way it's going to leak when it goes back together if it is not remedied.

In the past I have attempted to solder a leaking heater core on my Oldsmobile and found that I just couldn't adequately get a good joint and wound up making it worse by melting some of the solder from the surrounding joints. It was no big deal since the heater core was a mere $30 dollars. However that isn't going to be the case with the F-20 even were I able to find replacement core. I would gladly pay the pro's to fix it properly but a cursory search seems to idicate that most local shops are proficient at flushing radiators and simply installing new ones, not actually repairing such a situation as I have at hand. My question is; Are problems such as this addressed by a good old fashioned radiator shop and I should just keep on looking or am I kidding myself and looking for something that was never really done in the first place. I am assuming that it isn't too hard a job for someone who is proficient at it, maybe that's not the case.

The next question is do leave the core out to be worked on or would one expect the have to put it all back together for a shop to figure out which tubes need attention?

Our local radiator shop (Garrys Radiator Shop)does repairs but course most all he does is coolant systems and stuff. Alot of rads are sent to him believe it or not, not just local stuff. He does cars, trucks, tractors, rigs you name it. Mostly the ones that are far too $$$ to replace at the toss of a hat. Hes a real pro, the radiators look new when done. I had one repaired by him that lasted for over 5 years after. Then it fell apart, another he wouldnt repair it was just too far gone.

However, first thing he does is clean the crap out of it inside and out. If any signs of rotting he tells ya to get new one instead. It wont hold up or be worth it if the metal is rotting. Best have it checked by a real pro and ask if it is better to just replace it.

Remember to keep your radiator/water mix right. Too far off and its less effective at cooling, or causes the water pump bearing to fail (lube in rad fluid) and use the RIGHT radiator cap too. Too high presure and it will blow rad or lines too low and it will boil over at too low a temp, which isnt as bad as too high a cap! hehe.

Some radiator shops that do radiators for heavy equipment might be your best shot. Some of those cores are put together like the f-20. Find one and give them a call before you tear it apart, they may want it taken apart anyway. as for the leaks, check them out real good! they may have been frozen if the water didn't all drain out, or they may just be rotten.Rotten can't be fixed and hold for long. A good shop can make new tubes and put them in but might be high $$. One thing on your side is F-20 do not have pressure systems and are a lot more forgiving. A few years back, I bought a aftermarket new core for my 10-20. I sent it back right away. The fins are very thin and all some kid would have to do was run fingers down it and they would have bent and looked like crud. I got lucky and found an NOS core and used it. I did have to replace the bottom cast iron tank as it was rusted out.

In the event that you decide to get a new radiator core, they are availible at thefordsonhouse.com if youve never heard of it. They are availible here along with numerous other plentiful parts along with harder to find parts for all of the F-series. I would reccomnd this site if you choose to take this route as I got numerous parts for my F-12 from them last year and all of the parts, except one (the fuel pump kit) worked great.

Personally I would reccomend that you get a new core rather than paying to fix the one you have, because you never know how long the repair will last. Or how long till it decides to leak again.
