I picked up a very original 49 Cub, the other day. The guy who had it said that it ran great the last time he used it over a year im thinking 2 plus years ago. Anyway he fired it up and it fired up good but only ran for a few seconds. Now I got running at home and it smokes pretty bad and the gov. carb does not seem to kick it too well. I was wondering if the rings were stuck to the pistons? or something like that? I dont know much about cubs but it was just to nice to pass up. not sure what to go into first?

Thanks for the Help

Andrew

if you want to try something inexpensive, pick up a quart of marvel mystery oil from your local autoparts store. change the oil and filter in the tractor, put a pint in the crankcase with the fresh oil, then drain the fuel tank, put fresh gas in there, and dump the other pint of marvel oil in the gas, then run the tractor. marvel oil is a good cleaner/ upper cylinder lube, it will help to unstick the rings, and clean and lube the valves ect. its by no means a miracle cure, but it may help to get everything loosened up a little. then see what you got. you may just need to give the motor a good goining over-tune up, set valves, carb ect, or you may need to major the motor.

I wonder if you have carb trouble, maybe running too rich is giving you the smoke. I would check out the carb first, any tractor sitting that long usually ends up with carb trouble especialy if gas was left sitting in it. Beyond that do a compression test on each cylinder, that will give you an idea how good or bad rings and valves are. From my experience most Cubs that I had were just worn out. The motors are only 60 cu inch and really were not enough motor for them.
