On my old 140, I don't think it's charging. Still on the original positive-ground 6 volt system. Looks like somebody recently replaced the voltage regulator, and the meter looks fairly new, also. When running, the meter reads negative. When not running, and you pull the ignition switch out, it immediately goes neg.(from the neutral mark)-- so I think the meter is working. Battery is good, also. Everything looks very good, visually. Any short-cut jdeas for checking? I'm not very good with wiring.....Thanks for any ideas.....Tab

Well, I took the generator to my old, retired mechanic, and he took it apart and noted that one brush was stuck, not making contact. He fixed it, hooked it to a battery charger, and it took off like a motor. We thought the problem was solved. I put it back on the tractor, and it STILL won't charge. It's funny how you can have an old, rusty, crappy-looking tractor that runs and is mechanically flawless, and then you can buy a nice-looking, one-owner, well- maintained "pretty" tractor that gives nothing but trouble.I guess "lemons" come for the farm, too. I'm sure I will get it right, sometime.

Well the first thing i would do is take the generator to a place that can check it out to make sure its working. And if its working then you will have to look at the regulator and wirring. Good luck ...

I would start by polarizing the generator per the procedure in the operator's manual. If it works, and it well might, it is the quick and correct fix for your problem. mike durhan
