I ended up going with a new intake manifold in conjunction with the needed exhaust manifold. I spent about an hour trying to figure out how to install the new weight, spring and manifold heat control valve. Everything just seemed backwards to me and I finally gave up. Since the tractor will rarely have to do much starting in cold weather I found some steel that was very close to the thickness of the gasket between the intake/exhaust and blocked it off. Starts just fine at 80 degrees. I don't know what it will do at 20 degrees which is about as cold as it ever gets here. third party image

You will need the valve. Look up 656 in a parts search on www.caseih.com, it will show an exploded diagram for the manifold and valve. If I remember right it closes to the right as you look at your picture. I am not positive, though. Install the spring so that it expands and opens the valve. If you are still not sure, you can direct a little heat (propane torch) to the spring and see if the valve opens. Those engines are cold blooded.

I would install that heat valve if at all possiable. The tractor may start ok but its going to cough and want to die every time you open the throttle. The spring that controls that valve broke on my 706 a few years ago and turned the tractor into a coughing guttless mess below 50 degrees. Replaced the spring and it ran like new.
