484 is diesel right? If so its surely the glow plug warmer. My 2500B is like that. You warm the plugs about 15 seconds, push the fuel pump lever to on, then crank her over and she pops right off.

I did enjoy the starting fluid joke however, must remember that one!

What joke are you referring to. I made no joke. I have a 484 that dad bought brand new in 81, and have worked on some for neighbors. I do know what I am talking about. No 484 ever built had glow plugs in them. They do however have ether assist on them. I suggest that you study up on some of these tractors that you know nothing about, before offering advice that is wrong. No offense meant, but IH tractors did evolve some over the years.

For no offense ment that was pretty offensive dude. Calm down spanky its all good.

Your obviously not around cars and stuff much. There is a joke about starter fluid button but never mind you wouldnt get it. I though you were telling it like that not serious. Oh and ether in compressed form in a can on a hot engine! Real smart. Sure its not a primer system with fuel not starting fluid? Primers have been around FOREVER and still are. My saws and weedwackers still have them.

I came here to learn, get help and when I can offer advice. All net advice is to be taken with a grain fo salt less your a fool. Sorry for thinking this was a open minded community with intent to teach and help.

I dont know much tractors, just started. But I built my first car engine when I was 15 and it was a blue print job not some hack together block. 351m to be exact. So hey whatever....I wont help or offer advice any longer Ill send them your way! Between this and the reverse batt thread...you guys arent exactly coming accross as a friendly bunch.

Cars and tractors are two seperate beast. Look up any 74/84/85/66/86 and some more on CaseIH. com and you can see for yourself. IH has been using the ether assist for 40 years and it works very well. Had I had no clue as to what Michael was asking I would not have replied to him at all. Prior to this system IH did use glow plugs on lots of tractors, but I am telling it like it is. His tractor and all other 84 series tractors have this devise on them. No I do not fool with many cars as I am a farmer who has fooled with lots of different tractors. I know very little about the 2500, but it is not a 484. Just trying to help.

I re-read this and it may have come across I was moching you or being ignorant. Sorry about that. I simply misunderstood. Your a smart guy and I respect everyone here.

See on older cars or when a newbie comes along and says whats that button do? We pick fun and say oh its the starting fluid button (as a joke). Which set my brain down the wrong path when you said that!

I would have never-ever guessed thats what its for. Experience is everything. Now I know and it seems each day here I learn something. I spend alot of time reading about my interests, we all start off knowing little to nothing. So all this stuff is pure gold to me (knowledge).

hope there are no hard feelings-

John Paul T. There are no hard feelings at all. I just wanted Michael to be sure and uderstand what he had. I have had trouble in the past explaining this some folks as it would seem to be a little dangerous, but it works like a charm. We all can learn something everyday. I have learned things here about some of my own tractors that I have run for over 30 years. Most the folks on this forum do their best to answer questions to the best of their ability and knowledge. Hang around there is lots of stuff to learn here for all of us.

The 484 with a D-179 3 cylinder engine surely has NO GLOW PLUGS. It is ether assisted. Was not even available with glow plugs.

Yo Mike - do you have a wiring diagram for the starter switch on your 484? I need to know where the wires go 'cause I lost track of that info when I replaced the switch on my 484 yesterday.

Thanks a bunch

Bob, go to CaseIH. com. They probably have the diagram there.

No they do not. The button is for the starting fluid unit. On the left side of engine there is a can of starting fluid attached to the side of it. When the button is pushed a small amount if starting fluid is sprayed to aid in cold weather starting. They work very well.
