Its best to look at what cam you have and what cam your buying. If you can find the # on it(usualy found on rough surface near front between machined parts) sometimes you can't read them or find. If you can find the # the ones that end in D suffix were used in M,SM,SMTA tractors. Ones that end with DA have the revised Valve timeing and were used in 400 and roughfly first 1/3 of 450 tractors. The cam was released for new 400 tractors but IH didn't always change at a certain time so some of the last SMTA could have ben equiped. ones ending with DB had the left hand thread change and used on rest of 450 tractors. When a cam change was made IH sold that cam for M tractors and whatever other tractors in series up until change was made for replacements after stock on hand run out. So later parts books printed will show same cam # for those tractors. Don't expect to find the same # on cam thats in parts book. On a 50 or 60 year old tractor don't take for granted what cam is in it,look for # or check specs. Cam gears may get mentioned also, they were improved at least twice with last improvment starting C264 engine # 155941 witch was in 400 tractors. So don't always go on tractor model for those parts either.

Use a 450 cam, they are the latest grind and very noticable power increase. JimN

Is there a difference in the cam in a 400 and a 450? if so can you still get them from IH ? My book shows same part number

It will but why would you? They are not ground the same and you might lose performance. Also, the SM cam has left hand thread locking nut where the M has a right hand threaded lock nut on the cam gear.
