OK, changed the Diff oil as suggested and yes, there was condensation in there. Filled her up (13 gallons, $65 per 5 gallon pail) and have found I have a leaking axle seal. What"s coming out there is still milky so that can"t be good. Has anyone ever just pulled the cover of the end of the axl housing and used an RTV gasket seal to save removing the wheel? Does it sound like it would work? Here"s the big question though... How difficult is it to remove the top deck and can it be done by one man?
My father has a C he just did but this M deck makes that look like tin.

When you drain the rear, you can't get 100% of the oil out. Those axel housings hold some oil, thats why you're getting gravy leaking out. You have to pull the wheel to replace the outer seal and you can get a good look at the outer bearing after the seal is pulled. There is no inner seal. If you need to put bearings in axel housing, you can work through pto hole to take bull gear off, then pull axel housing off rear to get to inner bearing.

Well, it sound as though I have some work to do. I am beginning to understand why the fellow, who I bought it from, sold it. He had completely rebuilt the motor and all seemed fine before I purchased it. Look what happens when you just top of the fluids... Thanks for both your help. I am looking at your old posts now Bob. Georgeky, That wasn"t even HyTran i bought and it was that expensive. It was just plain ole 80-90. My father bought the same stuff, 1 month ago, and it went up $10 since then. What"s it going to be 1 month from now? 1 year?

It will be expensive to rebuild the rear, but it will be worth it if you are going to keep the tractor a while. I ran my H down the road a few days back and it is so smooth now and it is so much quicker on accelleration and top speed than it was, It will be ready for long tractor drives. I might even take my old hay wagon and make a camper on top of it and go on a long trip somewhere. All on back roads! If you end up getting bearings find a bearing house, they should have both the bearings and seals and are so much cheaper than the dealer it is scary. They are even way cheaper than auto parts places. There is a good one in Terre Haute, Indiana called "Coldwell" and they had all but one bearing in stock and the one they didn't have they got in 2 days. I saved a ton going through them. IH wanted $169 for the outer wheel bearing and I got it from coldwell for $67 or so. Good luck with it and keep us posted on what you find.

Oh boy does this sound familliar! I just went, and am still going through, this on my H. what went from water in the rear went to a bad axle bearing and seal to a complete rebuild of the rear end and differential. No, RTV will not work. The top plate on my H was all I wanted to pick up by myself and I can lift a lot. Better get help for the M. and it is easier to lift the top plate off whith the wheel off or at least run them to the ends of the axles, but you are going to have to change at the very least the bearing and seal, you might have to change both inner and outer bearings. Here is one way to tell if the bearings are bad, take a mirror and look at the gap between the top of the axle and the cover and do the same for the bottom side of the axle. If the gap is the same the bearings might be ok. If the gap on top is smaller than the bottom, it is bearing time. One thing you can do is go search some of my old posts. There are a bunch of them for H rear ends. The M rear is very simillar. I had to change 14 bearings total, and I am glad I did even though I am still having a small problem, the old ones were so rough and wore out. Now the wheels move so smooth and nice and I think it may have picked up a few MPH on the top end.

I better add this, RTV will not work as an axle seal, it will work for sealing the end cap and the top plate. I bet the axel seal is leaking beacuse the bearings are bad, that is usually the cause anyway.

Carden, that is why I use another brand of fluid. That HY-Tran is high. Lots of folks have used RTV sealer you mentioned. I don't myself, just hard headed and use gaskets. Are you sure it is leaking there or from the axle hole. There is a seal inside that end plate as well. I have taken my deck off by myself, but it is heavy and help or a come a long is the ticket.I think that the gasket for that deck was around 80 bucks the last time I got one. I had to give 3.60 for a sediment bowl gasket and thought it was high. I wouldn't think there is enough water left in there to hurt anything. After it sits for a few days without being used, you can loosen the drain plug and might drain the remaining water out.
