Hey guys,
What kind of problem do I have if the oil smells like it has fuel in it? I drained a little oil out of the pan and it smells like it does have oil in it. Thanks for any help.

Diesel or gas?

Old's got it covered.

A bad float or needle is the most common cause. Shut your fuel off at the sediment bowl when you shut down, and you'll likely take care of it. I like to shut my fuel down and let it run a few (15-20)seconds before I kill the engine.

If you already do, or you start and it persists, you may have a combination of running way too rich and rings that aren't doing their job (too worn on an old motor or a new rebuild and not seated yet).

How's it run otherwise?

I forgot to say that its a Farmall M. Do you think the carb. is the problem? If so would that cause a very small amount of grayish / white smoke while shutting down? Thanks

Gas can get there 2 ways on that carb. One is from vapor going up and then condensing in the cylinders and then seeps past the rings. The other is from the govanor shaft. Easy fix because most float needle valve don't stop all the gas when you shut off the engine. TURN off your gas when you park it and then turn it on when you need to run it. Thats a good idea to do on ALL tractors because of that problem. Also don't run it till you have changed the oil because gas in the oil can mean a rebuild on the engine if run that way

Old, I think you were right about my 450D too. It does seem to smell of diesel when I pull the dipstick. I suppose this was causing the bearing to squeak. I still haven't done anything to it yet.

Yep fuel in the oil is never a good mix and can/will cost you an engine if you don't catch it before it takes out the bearings
