might as well tell ya the whole story on what i have done to my poor tractor. i got in april this year and it started up fine every time bumped the starter. the guy i bought it from told me to shut the gas off every time i use it but my friend dosent so i dident.also i left "on" switch on for two days and probly killed the coil so i bought a new one. and ever since i killed the coil it will start up rell good the first time and then it will only start if you pull it. btw this is a 6 volt system but it still wont start if you jump it with 12. i started leting it run out off fuel and then turning it off but still no luck. also the points look fine.

sorry for the long post and misspellings.

Is the coil primary connected properly? AS in a positive ground system would have the + terminal connected to the distributor "hot" connection. May make a difference. Try pulling at wires which feed the coil from the ignition switch down to the distributor. There may have been a terminal connection which got overheated when the switch was left on. This is not likely, but you need to check all primary wiring. Our SMTA had the coil primary feed wire break inside the insulation where it goes over the valve cover. Check it all out.

I would replace the points and condenser and see if the engine will still start without being pulled. Hal

Does that tractor have an external resistor for the coil ? the wires that burned up might be the external resistor. They are that way in my 444.....

Try running a hot wire from battery to the coil and see if it will start then. You won't need the switch on for this. It will not tell what the real problem is, but will eliminate some of the possible causes. If it starts and runs you can mark the points, coil and condensor off the suspect list. Then look at some of your wiring. Could even be a short in the starter, swith or who knows what.

Start it and run it for as long as it takes to not start again.
Pull a plug wire off and put a good (used is OK) sparkplug into the loose end. Ground the body of the plug to the engine, and have someone crank it (neutral etc.) If no spark, or weak and yellow, I would replace the condenser, then points, then a different 6V coil. (in that order). If the spark is good, The Carb may need a going through to be sure it is not causing flooding. JimN

Points can look good and still be bad. Also with leaveing the switch on you may have burned the points enough to have to reset the point gap which will also cause problems. Or as the other guy say the condenser may be bad. One other then you said the wiring burned up. Well then the little insulator going into the distubutor may have got hot and cracked it so now after it has run for a little bit if gets warm and opens up that crack and shorts out so then its a no go again. Or one other thnig the switch maybe going bad because of leaving it turned on and it got hot

Are you sure you bought the right coil? If so, I would change out the points and condensor since leaving the switch on that long would burn the points and could damage the condensor. Good luck!

I have left my switches on many times and it just ran my batteries dead. I have never had it burn up points or a condensor. I am not saying it isn't possible it just has not happened in my case.
