Other than wiring, what is required to change from mag to electronic ignnition. What parts will be needed besides a generator?

Which tractor is this? Does it have electric start? If not, you need to add a starter and battery to the list. You need to check to see if
the flywheel has a ring gear. You may be better off to have the mag rebuilt. The Magman on here rebuilds them. Hal

You will need a distributor, ignition switch, auto electrical type wire and battery voltage to the distributor.

If you decide to go this route you need to pay close attention to where the rotor is pointing on the mag before removing it from the engine. Make a sketch of where the rotor is pointing and when you install the distributor you turn the rotor to the position in your shetch. Don't move the engine after you remove the mag. Hal

Sometime I gotta get one of you IHC guys to educate me on those IHC mags (I need to get one n take it apart n study on it lol). Heres my question, You and I or Jim discussed this a while back and you or him even posted a page from a manual buttttt t I forgot it grrrrr rrrr. On mags with the spring wind n trip impulse assembly, before the spring winds n the impulse trips, it looks to me like the rotor tip position would be BEFORE where it would be when she trips n fires IS THAT RIGHT OR NOT????? ???

If it isssss ss right????? How about if hes setting up a distributor timing from scratch we should advise him to get the No 1 piston at TDC on its Compression Power Stroke and thennnnn nnn install the distributor so the rotor tip is lined up with the internal cap tower that leads to that No 1 cylinder????? ????

Of course, if the mag dont work like I was guessing, I see n understand your post as the easy simplest way to install the distributor so its in basic time.

Once you have the distributor n switch as Hal mentioned (I would feed battery voltage to the ignition switches BAT input terminal from the ammeters load side terminal and its IGN output down to the coil, of course) you need a coil. That would be a 6 volt coil if its a 6 volt tractor, while if its a 12 volt tractor you can use EITHER a full true 12 volt coil or a 6 volt coil plus a series ballast resistor.

You don't need the engine at TDC on the No1 plug on the compression stroke as long as you know where the rotor on the mag was pointing when you remove the mag. You can do the same thing on a car or truck if you need to pull the distributor. You make a note of where the rotor is pointing and pull the distributor. Then don't move the engine. You can reinstall the distributor by repositioning the rotor to same spot as you noted. The engine should start and you should check or reset the timing with a light. I had to do this on my 1981 Cougar to get to the thermostat housing.

Thanks Hal, it wasssss s you who posted that before. I will try n study my lessons better. I agree then with your method and have often done the same myself, just mark the rotor location and reinstall the same n youre good to go. It was the impulse operation n where it left the rotor before or after that I wasnt sure about.

When I was going to pull the distributor on the Cougar I marked the distributor body with a magic marker where the rotor was pointing and was real easy to reinstall. Just remenber not to crank the the engine while the distributor is out. When I was using twin cylinder garden tractors that had mags I always removed the mag when finished in the Fall. I marked them with finger nail polish before removing them and it was easy to reinstall them in the spring. They were on steel and I just covered them with a tarp. Hal

If one is unfamiliar with the basic operation of the Kettering ignition/charging systems, it is wise to do a little reading about it BEFORE underaking such a conversion. You are, after all, in effect building a Kettering system from scratch. You wouldn't try to build a radio from scratch without doing a little reading first, would you?

If you don't like that kind of learning, you would do well to get someone else to design the system, and then install it yourself. Consult with your local automobile electrical shop. Try to find someone who likes to fiddle with older cars.

And, keep the parts associated with the mag, etc., that may no longer be needed. The tractor will be worth a few bucks more with them.
