Hugh, you folks celebrate "Canada Day" on July 1. We got rid of those Englishmen and their nasty Redcoats back in the late 1700s after our Declaration of Independence was announced on July 4, 1776. What do you celebrate? (Maybe getting rid of Americans?)

Lowell: Actually I see it a bit different than that, you see when Europeans came to North America, the rugged Scots, Irish, Scandinavians and other Northern Europeans, spread out across present day Canada and the Northern US. The English being the softies they were, headed south into the Verginias and the Carolinas. Until you folks threw the tea in Boston Harbour and declared Independence, the English had very little interest in Canada. After that they came crying home to Canada, being what they saw as part of the British Empire and as United Empire Loyaliats. Most of them soon got tired of cold winters, and headed for such spots as Austrailia, New Zeland, etc. Thus in 1867, we did pretty much as you folks without even firing a shot, or throwing tea in the harbour.

About the only connection we have with them anymore is the picture of the Queen on our $20. bill. I find more Americans get facinated with that than do Canadians. Quite often when I'm in the US, folks will ask me to see one of my $20. bills, to see the picture of the Queen. I guess they are Englishmen who's ancestors didn't make it back across the border.

LA, we are much like you American friends, the celebration is to make the founding of Canada on July 1st 1867. That is the official birthdate of our country. We do much the same things as the fourth of July celebrations you have..a holiday, parades, car shows, tractor pulls, families together, BarBQues, and fireworks...and if you guys hadn't got all upset about the tea tax and that incident in Boston we might all have been celebrating on the same day!!!Heeh hee!

I think Hugh may be out moving the earth again being he hasn't responded, as he is an early riser. I just went back to his post to US Americans yesterday and did a google on the Blue Water Bridge and clicked just one link - neat pictures and the 'red maple leaf' is flying with 'old glory'. Hugh will get back at ya, or maybe he is 'eye-balling' some work astride one of his off-set Farmalls. Enjoy your day.

Al: Right on, moving earth is what I was doing. Oh, how much better that bulldozing job is than trucking. The most annoying thing in front of you is a pile of earth. You just sit back and imagine each clump of earth is a car driver.

From where I'm buldozing, I'm actually looking down on the Blue Water Bridges. The old bridge carries 3 lanes of west bound traffic and the new bridges 3 lanes east bound. From the top of those bridges one can see a long ways into Michigan. the land on the Ontario side rises more quickly. I expect had I been out there at dusk on the 4th, I could have seen fireworks in all those towns from Lexington to Marine city. There must be a dozen or more towns in there.
