I have a 400 that runs great except coil gets so hot the oil has leaked out.400 has 3 wire alt with small resistor so it wont back fed to ignition. Coil is a 1.5 omhs with external original type resistor and Im assuming its 12 volt. I tried a old delco coil I had lying around,I think 6 volt. Hooked it up same way with resistor and same story, boiling the oil out.Yes coil is grounded ned to distributor. Any ideas appreciated. Jeff.

My Dad's SMTA had a very bad problem with burning out coils, so he converted the tractor to negative ground and never had the problem since.

You need that ballast reistor in the wire from your ignition switch to the coil. Hal
PS: Boats use them too.

Your problem is you have a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt battery. You need a ballast resister in line so as to knock the 12 volts down to 6 volts. I use a ballast resister made for the mid 70s dodge cars and trucks and they work well and are cheap. By the way you need to replace the coil since it has been leaking oil. You can also get a coil that say right on it no external resister needed and thats a 12 volt coil and then you don't need the ballast resister
