I'm working on a Farmall Super C and have just diagnosed that I have a few stuck valves. I've been soaking them in a mix of transmission fluid and motor oil. They seem to be freeing up, but I don't want to hurry it and break something. Are there any tricks out there that anyone wants to share? Are there any precautions I should take when I'm ready to fire it up? Thanks in advance.

Spray them with PB Blaster and lightly tap them back and forth with a large hammer until they free up. Don't hammer too hard or you can flatten the valve and it won't fit through the hole. I have removed many stuck valves this way and it works well.

I have done what George does many times and it works good, I might put some kero in a squrit can and flush the stems when the come back up. I have also taken ATF and pour it straight into the intake when it is running at higher speed. I had one free up like that because getting the valve cover off was a pain on that old Oldsmobile with A/c

Dan, I peck on them. I sit a block of oak on the top of valve stem and peck it with a hammer until they work well. I have done this many times and it works great.

Thanks for all the great advise! I've been troubleshooting this problem of not starting for a week and finally it dawned on me to pop the cover to check the valves. Sure enough there were three of them stuck open. I've got all three moving but will continue to soak them and tap them over the next couple of days. Hopefully she'll be running this weekend..

It usually just takes just a few minutes of pecking and oiling. Of course this depends on how bad it is. This is a common problem with these little tractors, if they sit for periods of time and not started.

If more than 2 are stuck I remove the head and use carb cleaner on them. I then remove them and clean them with a wire brush. I have found that most of the time they stick due to crud on the valve stem.

Don't pry on them to pull them back up because you can brake one that way. I take vise grips and turn them a little bit side to side to pop them back up and turn the engine over to push them back down. Now if the head is off its easy to pop them closed but then harder to reopen them. Makeing them move helps to free them up and also keep pouring the tranny fluid to them as you get them to move. Some times you can also fill the cylinder with tranny fluid and then turn the engine so it gets to the part of the valve that is in the manifold but that only works well on the exhaust
