been doing a lot of body work for a number of years, done a few of my own tractors. I prefer to use PPG DCC Concept over DPLF epoxy primer... NOT cheap... last tractor I did, the paint was $325 / gallon... I went through a gallon and a half, 3 coats total on top of 2 coats of DPLF... which runs $100+ / gallon... plus catalysts and reducers...

I had 20 hours on the sandblaster to take the M to bare metal... 11 on the W4... by the time you figure in the hours and material costs 2K is a bargin...

I would use the tisco IH red because that is what we used to paint my Cub and it came out great.

Boy that sounds like a bargain if it's a good job. Had two different people paint my 4020 and neither job was any good, greased over things he didn't want to paint and got sand in fittings. Had many problems to fix plus ended up paying a professional shop to paint it correctly. My experience is you get what you pay for.

Having taken three down to bare metal, I wouldn't do one for less than $2000, but I'm not in the business. There are near perfect paint jobs (I don't think there is anything that is perfect), there are lousy paint jobs, and everything in between. It does not matter, as long as it satisfies you. I have never seen an old tractor that did not need sheet metal work.

There was a Super C in the Progressive Farmer magazine several years ago that the owner had it painted for $700.00 and it didn't look that great to me. You can put $300.00 into paint and not get very much if you use PPG's Omni or Martin Senours Crossfire paint. I paid $70.00 dollars
for a quart of PPG's Omni, gallon of thinner, hardner and surfacer. The primer was extra with hardner. Hal

If a quality prep and cleanup, quality paint, materials and top notch job furnished and done by the painter thats cheap compared to what a lot charge.

I paint mine myself and there is no way I would paint one for $500.

I wouldn't paint one for less than $500.00. By the time materials are bought, plus my time is worth something, then there is always something the owner missed in prep work. $500.00 is a good deal...

Is he supplying the paint and thinner for that price? When you are using this paint with hardeners you need to be using a supplied air system and not breathing the any of the overspray.
Serious health problems can arise. Here's a picture of a tractor that a man in Ohio painted.
He has all the safety equipment. He powered washed the tractor then removed the wheels and then sandblasted the tractor. Hal

Hal, that is a good point about the overspray. My FIL died of cancer. He was eat completly up with it in his organs(liver, pancreas, lungs and so on) before he had any symptoms. He ran a body shop for 25 years and done lots of sanding and painting. The doctors thought that his problems were related to all the paint. He became sick one fall and thought it was the flu. He wouldn't go to the doctor and never seemed to get better. Finally the next March, they got him to go and the doctors said there wasn't anything could be done for him. They advised him to get his affairs in order and go home and weait on death. He died laying on the couch three weeks later.

You don't want to fool around with today's auto paint. I've seen these body shops that had painters just wrapping a rag over their nose and mouth. There's warning signs all over the paint cans now. Dupont's Imron paint was about the first that I heard from painters suffering from
using this paint. Most auto body shops now have
a spray booth with an exhaust fan and a supplied air system for the painter. Take a look at this web site. Hal

Jonnny, that was my point. If you are just going to use it anyhow, why not paint it yourself. The JD don't have 7 coats on it, he stipped it and started fresh on it. He is a retired farmer and only shows it. He uses a Super C for his gardening and hay mowing chores.

$500 sounds way too high. $200-$300 does not sound bad if it is the correct color.

Sounds higher than hell to me. I paint my own. They turn out very well most the time. I learned very early, that I had to do these things myself. I can't just throw money at someone else to do something I can do. You can do it too. That is my favorite part of finishing up one. I have painted some a second time as the first didn't suit me. I know a guy that painted his JD 730 propane 7 times before it suited him. He has since taken several first at local shows.

If you already did the paint clean up, id say that would be the high end of the price.
