I've been out slaveing on pulling that clutch input shaft out of the M. I took the bolts out of the u-joint and everything else is loose, I lack about 1/2" I assumed, so I tried taking the half of the u-joint off the transmission, well the shaft come with it about a 1/4" and just couldn't hold it in, and I couldn't get that off due to I was hitting the shaft end. So I looking in the I&T manual agian and cominsed to taking bolts loose on the clutch cover, I'm afraid something is gonna fly to pieces if I keep that up. Im just lacking possibly 1/4" or less, just can't get it. Do I start horseing it around or what else can I do, or just keep going on the clutch?

Thanks, DEREK

I did not read all the other posts, but here's my 2 cents worth. First, I found it necessary to remove the clutch cross shaft. That is the one with the fork on it that engages/disengages the clutch. The fork is attached to the shaft with clamp bolts and with two heavy washers on the bolts that serve as keys so the fork can't rotate on the shaft. Pull the bolts and the heavy washers and remove the stuff on the outside and the cross shaft will slide right out. Next, take three of the six bolts out (every other one) that hold the clutch pressure plate to the fly wheel. Reinsert the bolts in the three empty holes in the clutch plate and tighten them up. This compresses the clutch plate springs and releases the clutch so the clutch plate is loose. Once this is done and all else is loose, it's easy to pull the drive shaft back and tilt it so it will come out. I managed to get mine out without removing the cross shaft, but there was no way I could figure to get it back in. I presume you got my post about the source for the clutch release sleeve that you need.

Hey Derek, give this a try if you haven't already. With the coupler all apart pull the clutch shaft back into the trans flange while they are 90 deg to each other, then with a little wiggling around, turn the trans flange and clutch shaft at the same time and in the same direction. My H went back together nice like that. I may have had the bolt off for the trans flange also.

Thanks Bob! I finally got it! Since that carier sleeve was mangeled it was in the way of getting the shaft bolts out, so I hammered it a little and got up there and got it out and the clutch fell out along with the shaft!

Thanks again, Derek

a couple more things, make sure all the bolts are out of the coupler and the ring (center part of the coupler) is out. Also if you end up pulling the clutch pressure plate take out 3 bolts and look for 3 holes in the cover the size of the bolts, run the bolts in and tighten them down, that will draw in the plate springs and make it easier to remove and put back in.

Once you take the 4 tapered bolts out of the input shaft you to take off the clutch lever rod that goes from the clutch pedal to the throw bearing shaft on the left side of the bell housing. Disconnect it from the lever up forward on the throw bearing shaft. Then there are two bolt at the top of the bell housing on the inside. The two bolts connect to a tube that the throw out bearing slides on to the top of the bell housing. The input shaft from the clutch to the tranny also goes through this tube. Once you pull these two bolts out the next step is to remove the two bolts that connect the throw out bearing housing to the throw out bearing lever. There should be two washers that act as keyways on this throw out bearing lever shaft. Pull the two key way washers out. You have to slide the throw out lever towards the left side of the tractor and spin it to gain access to these keyway washers. Then slide the whole shaft out to left side of the tractor. After you remove all of this then the input shaft, throw bearing guide tube, throw bearing assembly, pressure palte, and friction plate can be removed all at the same time. Pay close atention to how it all comes out because you will have to install it in a reverse manner. I have done this a couple of times on my M. It is fairly easy to do if you have a helper standing by. I figured out how to do this by looking at the parts book for the clutch. The terminology that I used for the parts mentioned above may not be correct but by looking at where I'm talking about you can figure it out. By the way, if you have an M with a 12" clutch this will not work. Check you serial number then go to the parts section of this website. If you have a serial number that has an 11" clutch you can remove it how I said above.

see everything is not bolted up any more, because the whole thing got wrecked, the tube with the two bolt mountings is completely destroyed and the piece with the two ears that is also on the shaft is broke a little but it just wont clear that other half of the yoke

Thanks, Derek

I just read your other post again in reply to LinemanFarmer, 07-03-2007 16:15:45
I bet you didn't pull the two bolts out that connect the throw out bearing lever to the carrier? That more than likely didn't brake. Mine was in the exact same condition you have described, but mine broke one of the tabs off of the bell housing. Anyway, you have to remove the shaft from the left side of the bell housing. Did you pull the two bolts and keyway washers that clamp the throw out bearing carrier to the lever shaft?

I just read your other post about that. My M was like that when I bougt it. Did you take out the 5 bolts that hold your pressure plate on? It may be 6 bolts. You have to take these out then slide the friction and pressure plate backwards a little to make sure that they are free. Also what about the carrier for the throw out bearing? You have to take that off and remove the shaft. If you do that and everything else is destroyed put the tranny in neutral, then spin the input shaft on the front of the tranny 90 degrees from the angle of the removable shaft. Slide the removable shaft backwards to clear the pilot bearing and it should all come out. Post back if this don't work.
