Allan,
Saw the add in the photo adds for the 1066 for 4800 with a spun bearing. Ya think its worth looking into? Been looking at getting a bigger tractor for the farm to replace the 656D.
What do ya think?

Thats a bit highas you will get another 25-3000 grand in fixen it . Now is a rod or a main that spun ??? if it's a main she will have to be line bored plus a crank. Then ya have to worry about the T/A and hyd's pto and other woren out parts . If ya could get it for the 2500 range then ya can put everyting in it new and have something but i am here to tell ya it's a ton of work as i have done that on three sofar and if ya include labor you will end up with over 18000 in it but she will be as new as one can make it . Back 10-12 years ago i had just sold a cream puff for 8950 and the fallowen day a young guy and his dad came in looking for a 1066 , I told them that i had sold the last one the day before and all that i had left was a 706 gasser . I told them that i knew where there were three more and i could get one of them for about the same money , they told me that they could buy 1066's all day long for 5000 so we left it at that . two mounths later both of them show up and want to know how much to put a GOOD T/A in was going to cost them and i explained that wheni did a T/A i also recomendeda new clutch and PTO drive and gave them a ferm price as long as i did not find something out of wack then the price went up . They agreed to the price and told me to come and pick up the tractor . Well when i got there it would not start , Starter out to lunch bad batterys so we pushed it up on the trailer . Got it in the shop with the help of the backhoe and the fun started , Every bolt broke off and i mean every bolt and when i opened up the speed transmission every gear was toaste plus both shafts also reverse was also out and park loc was broken the dash support was broken shift shaft were bent ahhhh but they bought it cheap gave 5200 for it . Well we ended up maken more on fixen that one thenif i sold them a good one that would have went to the field . With all the mechanical work and new parts new tires and a show paint job that one was just shy of 19000 .Now keep in mind our shop labor rate at the time was 25 and hour.

Gosh TV, I guess I will just keep the 656. Maybe I just don't need all of that. The tractor is good or perfect mechanically...just kinda small.
It don't look real pretty...but it pulls like train.

My cousin still has the 656 Grandpa bought new in 1966. We used to put duals on it and pull 4 16s - it would plow 2 acres an hour. He also has a 1066 and 1466. You can keep the 656 going for a lot less $$$! The 1466 spun a bearing two years ago, a used motor was cheaper than rebuilding the original one and it was still a lot of money!:^)

If your looken to step up a bit in power and a littel heavier tractor but ya don't have the bigger implements to go with it do it a littel at a time this way ya can get more toys over a longer time frame . If ya got a 656 now why not move up to lets say a 706-806 756- 856 as as time goes on and ya buy bigger toys to go with them ya move on up to a littel bigger tractor . since there is so much horse power jump from a 656 to a 1066 if ya get stuff that the 1066 can handel and the 10 goes down your screwed but if ya only have 20 horse between then ya can scrap by and get the work done while one is down . like us we need something between the 806 and the 1066 and i have been thinking on that . Now if we keep getting more ground then there is going to be a huge gap in horse power as i have been kicking the ideal around on a 4x4 artic. as a prime tillage tractor and moven up to a lot bigger planter. Then BIG stuff is cheep and also is the older implements in the 20-28 ft range .Our 1066 is realy set to high as even with the direct axel mount duals we can not use all the power to the ground.

That's pretty high.

If it spun a bearing, it in all probably, took the crank with it, which is another $1K all by itself.

That's a $2500 tractor the way it sits.

Allan
