I have a MD with the batery under the seat...it is a 1950 model. i have read that the battery under the seat was a option. So im thinking that is true it is a possibality came that way. There dosent seam to any kind of"mark" where the second battery would of gone just to the right of the seat. I know they also put them under the tank also. just courious.

Interesting...my Super MTA has the battery under the seat (12v). My neighbor"s 460 Diesel is a 59 1/2 year and he said it came with 2 6v batteries.

The 560/460 Diesels as well as the 06,56,and 66 series diesels came from the factory with (2) 6 volt batteries. Only the stage II Supers as well as the SMTA/400/450 came with (1) 12 volt battery. Not sure about the 350 Diesel.

Our 1949 MD now has one 12 volt under the tank, but before that it had one 6 volt under the tank and one on top of the PTO shield. The box for that one was the same as the one under the tank. That might have been the one you could mount beside the seat, but with it above the PTO you had more room on the deck for your feet. Yes you needed both 6 volts in the good old days to start it on gas. If ours would turn over it would start, even on a cold Minn day. Most of the time it would start when other gas tractors wouldn't. Now with the high powered 12 volt batteries one under the tank is enough.

If you mean under seat like a stage 2 SM it didn't come that way. Battery was under tank and one was under but to right of seat was used through stage 1 SMD with 6 volt in each. In 1954 IH offered a field application only a hydraulic seat suspension and battery box package for MD and stage 1 SMD. Package included seat assembly, battery box, rear light support, new battery cable and new gear shift lever.

My dad and grandpa each owned MD's, they were both 1949 models. They came from the factory with 2 batteries. The one under the seat was not quite like the ones that were under the seat on the stage II Supers, etc. Dad eventually went to one twelve volt battery and removed the box under the seat. He later traded the MD for a new 400. A few years later our shed burned down and we found the old battery box in the debris.

We had a '53 Super MD and it did have dual 6 volt batteries for a 12 volt system. Tried using one 12 volt, but the batteries of the day didn't have enough amperage to do the job in the winter. We went back to two 6 volts. One battery was under the tank, and one under the seat.

Yes, MD's came from the factory with a second battery under the seat and a 12V electrical system with (2) 6 volt batteries in series. Most of the under-seat boxes have been removed when 12V batteries became common. It shows pictures of both right in the operator's manual. Finding the below-seat battery box is about impossible. Saw one at RPRU a few years back and they wanted $150 for it. They have a metal bracket similar to the below gas tank boxes that allows you to take it loose and slide it backwards to allow access to the battery. I wound up taking a regular M battery box and made a bracket to mount it under the seat. Not exactly correct, but about the only option I had when I restored it 10 years ago. Brian

My MD had the 2nd battery box to the right of the seat when I bought it in 1966. I removed it when a 12-volt battery was used under the tank. I still have the extra box. Had no idea these were hard to come by or desired by collectors.

MD's do not have 2 batteries, they start on gas with normal compression. The other fact. spot for the battery is under the fuel tank, ust behind the gauge plate. I've never seen an MD with the battery under the seat. Doug N

doug you need to do a little more research. yes all md's came from the factory with two six volt batteries as standard equipment. the old ih gas start diesel's would start directly on diesel once they were warmed up, that is why they have a large starter and two batteries.

I know nothing about MDs except they have variable compression to start on gas and switch over to diesel. Since they start on gas I would be suprised if they had 2 batterys, but like I said, not famillar with them. I have seen a few start in the past and remember the tons of smoke rings they put out until they warmed up. You got me curious on this one.
