Any difference in noise level from a 656 vs. 706 muffler?

I put a new exhaust manifold on my 656 Gas. From reading the archives I apparently was shipped a 706 manifold. No big deal but I was wondering if the size of the exhause pipe and stack would make any difference in noise level. I don't have a 706 muffler to compare to but I would guess the muffler itself is identical. Should I put a 2 1/2" to 2" adapter on and use the new 656 muffler I already have in hand from the IH dealer or should I exchange it for a 706 muffler. I will put on a new exhause pipe either way. This next question is really stupid but...does the galvanized last longer than black or does it not make a difference. The pipe that was on it was a little lighter weight than water pipe and did not really take much unscrewing to remove.

Also, does anyone know home much quieter the operators position might be if I weld a curved piece of tubing onto the stack to point the exhaust forward instead of the straight up/rain cap combo.
All feedback appreciated.

Picked up a 2 1/2" to 2" reducing bushing and 2" nipple today so that is the route I am going. (Owner of the plumbing store has a 52 H). If the new mufflers are all straight thru design what about swapping over to a nice quiet automotive muffler with 2" inlet? I suppose it would look a little odd; does anyone do that? I'm disappointed that it sounds like neither the factory nor the aftermarket offer a "real" muffler.

I do wear ear muffs whenever operating at any rpm's but am always looking for alternatives. (Like maybe a late generation air conditioned cab!)

If your muffler is in good condition, install a reducer bushing in the manifold (if you can find one). If your current muffler is getting a little long in the tooth, get a new 2-1/2" muffler.

ALL the new mufflers are loud these days because they're straight through with absolutely no baffling to speak of. You'll gain a couple of HP with the bigger stack, though.

A good set of hearing protectors is the best remedy for a loud tractor. I don't think pointing the exhaust forward will make much difference.

I agree totally. The best muffler today is pushed over your ears, mine even has a radio in it. Had I used them years ago, I wouldn't say "what" so much now.
