I just called about a tractor I want to buy and the guy said the Model # is SMD Serial # F42132J and that it was a gas tractor.Am I correct in that the SMD is Super M diesel But the F is a gas serial number.

CNKS, I read your post and your comments make lots of sense. However, My SMD serial number is definitely an E instead of a F. Does this make it more valuable?? Ha Ha.

I agree that the first line is either SM or SMD on the super series. The second line should start with a F or an L depending on the manufacturing location. Marv

If the serial plate is still readable and its a SMD serial plate. Above the F 42132 J on plate would be SMD with D stamped in. F just showes it came from Farmall works instead of Louisville. To the best of my knowleage no diesel SM tractors were assembled at Louisville. No information you give rules it out from being a SMD.

I have a 1953 SM gas and a 1953 SMD. Listed below are the serial numbers.

For the gas:
SM
F47872J

For the Diesel:
SMD
E43380J

Hope this helps. Marv

The E in the second one is really an F.

The 4 cylinder IH diesel engines start on gas and then switch to diesel -- the seller does not know what he has, so beware. The SMD is the correct serial prefix for a Super MD. The F probably means it was built at the Farmall plant, some Super M's were built at the Louisville plant and have an L prefix. But, I was under the impression that the those built at the Farmall plant did not have the letter F, but that the Louisville ones had the L. Possibly the diesel engine was replaced with the Super M gas engine.

The gasoline engine suffix, not prefix, is X1, the X1 is to distinguish it from distillate and kerosene engines which were still available at that time; the diesel ones do not have a suffix to identify them as diesel as that engine is self explanatory.
