Yes. A JD 227 on an M Farmall was the machine of choice around here for many years. The 227 was offered with two different styles of mounting brackets. One style would fit the picker to John Deere tractors, the other style was the universal mount, which would fit the picker to just about any color of tractor you had. Most of the 227s were sold with the universal mounts, even when the picker was to be mounted on a JD.

What"s the odd"s of a guy finding a universal mount that would work on an M ?
the one that came with the picker is for a JD.

I have not tiede it, but am reasonably sure that with some modification to the mounting bracket it would work. That is only an assumption mind you, but don't see any reason why it could not be done. JD might have even sold mounts for the Farmall.

no need to stir the pot, Jonnny. I'm sure there are lots of red tractors pulling green implements out there. Why do I do it? cost and availability of equipment when I needed it. can't always afford to buy new or wait for someone to retire with my brand of choice.

Lot of green pulling red too. IH #70 3-16's behind the JD 730. IH #720 4-18's behind JD 4020. If I remember, I think Dad pulled an IH disk harrow behind his "Old A" John Deere. Oh ya, red & yellow New Holland baler and forage chopper behind green tractors.

Exactly Mike, I have a New Idea picker for my M. I pulled a JD KBA disk harrow with the M for years. Also used a number 5 JD mowing machine for a while. It was a great old mower. I pull my JD chopper with an IH, also have a JD silage wagon and a JD hay roller. If it works it is a good one regardless of name or color.

And don't forget the fact that every once in awhile, a cerain manufacturer will come up with an idea or design change that does make one brand just a little bit better than a competing brand. The 227 picker is one example, the JD 494 planter is another. IH did build an excellent picker, and the IH built cyclo planter was very good also, but maybe a bit ahead of its time? I can also remeber when the Massey-Ferguson 410, 510, and later the 750 combines were the machine of choice but when worn out got replaced with the Deere machines, and those combines got replaced with Case-IH. Just goes to show that no single brand is ever the best. The brand you use is whatever is best for your particular situation.

Rusty Farmall, that is also very true. I have plowed lots of ground with a 730 Deere and 4X16 IH plow. Then worked the ground with an IH no 37 disk. Had a 2940 and 4440 pulled MF plows behind both of those. When I use to hunt in Nebraska, there were many MF combines there. They used IH and JD tractors, but claimed MF combines were the best at that time.

I am getting ready to scrap an old mounted IH picker, not sure if 2ME, but it's that style, for an M. We bought it in the mid 60's as a parts picker. It has sat over the hill ever since. Someone on this forum indicated they could use some parts, but I was never able to contact them at the e mail they gave. I wont scrap it till cold weather, dont want to argue witht he wasps, rattlesnakes, and copperheads.
