My dad has 656 hydro. When you are going forward it works fine if you are in the lower half of the speed range. If you are in the upper 1/2 of the speed range, the hydro seems like it just goes into nuetral. There aren't any sounds like transmission teeth going out of gear, etc.... it just goes flat. If you push clutch (stop n inch) pedal, the system recovers and it will "go back in gear" and work again. Any suggestions what could be wrong? I have ordered shop manual to pressure test, but hasn't arrived yet. Just looking for prelim ideas.... thanks!

Check the LH fiberglass hood panel, the holes wear out & let it shift sideways. When you go up the slot with the S/R lever the slack lets the drive caplule open up in the drive control valve. Quick check when you loose the forward travel push in on the S/R lever towards the center of the tractor. Idle down some before you do this. Will take off if this is the problem. If so loosen up bolts and crowd the hood piece in so it works. Also check for wear where the lever hooks to the drive control spool. Can usually shim up. These tractors were notorious for this problem.

I am sure Ted is right on this one have seen it several times myself. Usually a real easy fix.

How does it act in reverse?

Are the troubles both in Lo and Hi range?

Sorry, I replied to this earlier, but for some reason my response didn't show up. I appreciate all the suggestions so far. It doesn't do it in reverse. I think it does it in both hi and lo range, but need to check with dad to be sure.

My dad just clarified that it only happens when the SR lever is pushed over 2/3 forward in LO range. It works fine at slower speeds, but almost always happens over this speed. It appears hi range is ok.
