dropping the Liftall Pump

I read my posts from last night and you guys are looking positive that I wont have to split the tractor. So I went out and looked at the liftall pump and my does it look like a tough one to get out! Am I seeing this right, there are bolts also that hold it in that come in from the back side and have to get to them from that inspection hole? I guess I might need some detail of how to get that thing out of there.

It really is as scary as it sounds, I had the one out of this parts tractor in 10 min total. The coupler was already taken off, but that only takes a few seconds to undo anyway. hardes part is getting the cotter pins out. Only 4 bolts hold it in, so watch out on the last one. While kneeling on the left side, I had the block of wood and the floor jack under it and ready to go. I took out the last bolt and steadied the pump with my right hand and used my left hand to work the jack to let it down. It would be easier if someone else steadied it or worked the jack, but the girlfiend was in "one of those moods". I got it ok.

The LiftAll drive coupling for the M is a "cross" coupling, not a sleeve with pins which is used on the H. The "cross coupling" runs in slots in the coupling pieces on the ends of the shafts. When you remove the liftall, the slot must be vertical so the coupling can slide out of the slot when you lower the lift all. If you need to replace any shaft seals while you have the lift all out, the seal on the transmission shaft and the one in the liftall run on the coupling pieces which are threaded onto the shafts. They unscrew with righthand threads, but often they are stuck tight and can be a chore to remove.

i have a couple lenghts of round stock, pretty sure its 3/8, tap one end back about an inch on each one. remove two of the belly pump bolts kitty corner from each other, screw the rods in, i think mine are about 24 inches long. then put the floor jack undet the pump, remove the other two bolts let the jack down slow till its on the ground, then take the rods out. that pump is an awkward rascal, and like the other guys said, its heavy. ya may want to put a new seal and gasket in the pump when its out too if its leaking.

I used a floor jack and a couple 1x2 blocks of wood on the saddle to help keep it straight as I lowered it. I also drained the oil out to make it a bit lighter. I will be doing another one in just about 30 min.

OH yeah, don't forget this!, when raising it back up with the floor jack make sure it doesn't hang up on anything on the way up, like the driveshaft.

Take out the three pipes for hydraulic pressure, the cap off of the fill pipe (the 2-way control valve and coupler on top of the fill pipe if so equipped),the bolt fastening the control lever to side of pump and the drive for the pump. To remove drive pull the cotter pins or bolts, slide the two sleeves to the center of the shaft and turn the shaft if necessary until it drops out. The pump is heavy (75-100#)and will want to lay forward or back so put a floor jack under it to lower down to floor. Remove the four bolts on the bottom of the pump and remove. Dave

The H has the sleeve on the drive for the Lift ALL. The M has a different set up. There is no sleeve, just a "cross" coupling. The shaft must be turned so the slot is vertical and then the lift all can slide down.

If you are talking about the belly pump, it"s not a hard job, just a heavy one. Leave the four cap bolts on the bottom until last.

Use a pipe wrench to take off the three pipe fittings. Remove the control leaver and oil fill cap. Take off the inspection cover and remove the drive coupling by pulling the cotter pins and sliding the collars to the middle - the coupler will fall out, don"t let it hit you.

The tricky part is next. The pump is not flat on the bottom as well as top heavy, and will want to flip over when it clears the casting. There are lots of inventive ways to bring it down safely(lots of pics in the archives). IH suggests keyed T-handles, but if you"re not doing this more than once, you likely dont have a set laying around. Some people have modified transmission jacks to let the pump down slowley, others strap it to a rafter pulley and lower it that way. One way that works well but takes a little time is to replace two of the cap bolts with threaded rod in diagonal bolt holes (the pump will stay in place with the remaining two bolts until you are ready), spin nuts onto the rod finger snug and remove the remaining cap bolts. Now lower the pump by taking the nuts off the threded rod a little at a time on each side.

Whatever you do, be careful. The pump is heavy and no matter what you think, you will not be able to control it if it falls. You can mash a finger, toe or worse and even if you get out of the way you may break the casting when it hits the floor and you"ll be looking for another pump.

There are 4 bolts coming up thru the bottom of the pump edge. You can see them if you look. First remove the 3 hydraulic pipes. Now unthread the fill pipe. Unbolt the lift all lever assembly by untreading the retaining bolt. Next remove the dust cover and disconnect the pump drive shaft, which is held in place by 2 cotter keys and 2 sleeves. Now remove the 4 bottom bolts and lower the pump from the belly of the tractor. A floor jack works best because the pump is fairly heavy. Now you can replace the clutch thru the opening.
