Looked in archives, but answer not found. H-4 mag with new rotor, cap, points, condenser, etc. Spark out of coil to ground (some) but will not go through to spark plug.

How do I remove coil in Mag? How do I test magnet strength?

Owen

Thanks, I hadn't thought about the internal timing. It appears to be pointing at the correct point, but I will check. I got the tractor (BN) from a fellow that had someone else paint it. He said he had spark before it was painted and nothing after. I believe he messed with the the mag. I double checked the ground and other things.

Since you have fire from the coil wire to ground you may need a new coil wire that has copper wire
and on your plug wires too. You can check the magnets for magnetism using a flatblade screwdriver. They should attract that screwdriver with some effort. If you are going to pull the mag from the tractor for some reason make sure you make a sketch of where the rotor is pointing and don't move the engine after the mag is off. Then when the mag is reinstalled you turn the rotor to the position in your sketch and
install it on the tractor. Your coil should be under the cap with 4 screws as shown in this picture. Here's a picture of an old Wico mag off a twin cylinder garden tractor with magnets with no magnetism. Hal

You can look closley on the gears and there will be a indent on the gears..... line them up and you are set. if not mark them yourself and turn it oe caug at a time untill you get spark out each hole. I like to use the unsuspecting kids or wifr for this part..... . as it will only fire out one hole at a time in the direction or the rotor. but if the wife has no clue..... its like playing rulett! any how if you got 3 kids and a wife have each one grab a wire then turn the mag. at each click you should get a diffrent person of your family to get "jolted" and is rather a interesting experment. especally if they hung on to it before and got no shock! they will be like im not afraid, utill mr lighting bolt hits them in the butt! (in fairness i hung on to it too) seriously look for the indents on the little gears and line them up. jonnny2006

Did you take the little rotor gears out? If so look for timing marks on them and mesh the marks together. If they don't have marks, estimate where the rotor needs to point according to #1 nipple with #1 at top of compression stroke.

I know lots of folks say that low magnetism causes problems, but I have never seen a H4 mag with poor magnatism.

To take the coil out, take the coil cover off and take the two screws out on either end of the coil. Then take the condenser out to get the coil lead loose; then lift the coil out. If you want to check magnatism, now you can. Stick a screw driver in the housing near the magnets, and if it'll grab that screw driver with a little authority you should be fine.

If you have spark out the coil wires, the rotor being out of time is the number 1 reason for no spark out the sparkplug wires.

I tried the timing and changed it one tooth at a time on both sides of what appears to be in line. Still no spark. I held a wire in the center of the rotor cap and hooked it to a spark plug. I got a yellow spark at the plug. I do get a spark of about .25" when holding the center copper coil wire to ground. It is not a blue color, but a yellow spark. I also have copper spark plug wires, but it does not make any difference.

Who did they say sells rebuilt mags?
