I have an 856 which started making noises about a year ago in the rear end when backing up.I figured bearing going out and checked hyd filter but found no filings. Now this year clunking/popping noise has graduated to forward travel and sounds like it comes from the bull pinion right side area. Simple fix right? So last night I took apart said area and found no obvious problems. So I jacked the rear end up and rotated wheels to try to pinpoint problem. Sounded smoothe to me which would lead me to eliminate differential/ axle bearings. So thats where I am at right now. Tractor has a cab which I don"t want to mess with as I have the combine to tear into right now as well. In your opinion what area could cause these symptoms? Bearing out in range gears or in speed tranny? That would be causing shifting problems though right? Would just like to narrow down where to find problem without tearing whole rear end down. This tractor is probably in the 8-10,000 hr range.

I hadn't thought about that. But would'nt that cause the park lock to slip? I have no slippage in the park lock, but did have an uncle break the linkage from forcing the lock in place. Most time if it is the park lock I have found the lock(bear paw) busted off. I'll look into it though. Thanks for your advice.

Well this sounds like someone dropped the park loc while it was still moven and ya took one or more teethe off the gear in the range transmission . And if ya got a cab it's got to go and a split at the range to speed transmission is in order along with bull pinions and top rockshaft housing as the the ring and pinion have to come out and she ain't going to heal herself. My one buddys kid did that to there 706 and i have fied several others over the years . . since you have the cab ya have to pull the cab or at least leanit back and pull the range transmission cover and look if it is as i said you'll see it .

If you pull the side cover on the left side you can see the gears. You will have to use a mirror but it is a lot easier than pulling the shift cover with a cab.
