Hydraulic fluid level and maintenance for 140

Hello, Folks. Me again. I have changed all fluids in my 140, but have not checked or changed the hydraulic fluid. I have a 5-foot 1-point hook-up quick connect disk that I used today. My hydraulics seemed to struggle a little when lifting this, although it is heavy(makes tractor a little light on the front end). How often should this fluid be changed? I was told that I am supposed to let all implement arms down as low as possible to drain and re-fill, but how about simply adding some, if needed? Any methods to follow? Thanks for any advice(again).....Tab

Thanks. I AM going to purchase a manual. All other fluid levels are good. I probably put too much oil in the steering gearbox, and the former owner believed in a grease gun(too much, I might add). I have always had Fergusons, and have the manual for my TO-35(had that tractor since I was a kid). My hobby of fishing has been replaced by growing a big garden(don't fish anymore), so I got this 140. Thanks for the tips. Would e-bay be the cheapest place to buy a manual, or the worst? THANKS AGAIN!..... tab

Tab: I'd be a bit shy on buying a manual on e bay, particularly the IH operator's or the Blue Ribbon service manuals. Just as an example 140 had 4 changes in electrical during the production run. 140 had a 21 year production run, thus unless you get the right manuals as per serial numbers and changes, it might not be 100% applicable. I have the list of serial numbers as changes took place, if you wish to e mail me.

You'll probably swear a bit at that steering box, they were poor design and most leaked by the time they were 5 years old. I've had moly grease in my SA and 130 for 25 years now, just pumped the 140 steering box full of grease about a month ago. I just put a grease zerk in the drain plug and pump in grease until it comes out the fill plug. Takes about 3-4 tubes of grease for the initial fill up and after that I put in about 6 pumps every time I grease the front end. It's the best way I know to stop that oil from dripping on axle and collecting dust. Some folks call it John Deere Corn head grease, but that is nothing more than moly grease. You have to fill it at first, then what you add is forced to gears.

If I were in the market for 140 manuals, I'd go to Binder Books give them your serial number, and get the right one. It may be Binder only publish the final one with all upgrades these days.

Thanks, Hugh. My 140 is one of the older ones(with the horizontal bars across grill). It is in excellent condition for it's age, and never saw any heavy farming use. Thanks greatly for your help!!..... .....Tab

Tab: The tractor rockshaft arms at the fuel tank must be in rear position both for adding to or filling the hydraulic system. You then fill to the bottom of the fill hole.

At the bottom left of the touch control unit, is a cover held in place by 4 small bolts. About 3" kind of rounded square. Behind that cover is a cylinder type screen, designed to stop dirt from going to the pump on the suction side. That screen must be cleaned regularly. You will loose a bit of oil when you remove the screen.

Always use Hy tran or it's equivilant in the hydraulic system. If your disk is a 20 blade tandem that is just about the load limit of that hitch, and yes it will make the front end light. Since you are asking these questions, you must not have a manual. You should have an IH operator's manual at least. I can assure you that without a manual you have other lubrication points going unserviced.
