My brother in law has a cub he has been using to sidedress his 3 ac corn field. The tractor runs fine for about one hour, then it starts to miss just a little and after a few more minutes it cuts off. Let it cool down for 2 hours and it starts right up and does the same thing over again. I put new points and condenser in, cleaned the sediment bowl and screen. Carb is getting plenty of gas. Could it be the coil in the magneto causing this?

Good point Walt. It could be that fiber insulator washer. If its wet it could short the lug to teh coil case. Didnt think of that.

Id give that a go since a fiber washer if missing or damaged is $1. If it doesnt fix it replace the coil.

Al it could be the insulator on the pass thru screw comming out of the side of the distrubitor is bad. Cranked a cub with a hand crank for hours when I was a teenager finally dumb luck would have it I cleaned the oil off this pass thru insulator and it started right up. The cub had the same symtoms as you describe. hth WaltMo

yep here too on a ford we had that. THe oil seeped out of coil and wham she would shut off after it got hot. Sputter and spitting after hot was first sign.

Remember just like transfomers at power poll, a coil uses PURE oil (non conductive unlike reg oil) to cool the coils.

I'd almost bet it has a coil going bad. Runs an hour or so and then sputters and dies, wait 2-3 hours and run for another hour almost always a bad coil

Old, I agree it is almost certainly the coil.

You may have done this already but you may want to check the gap in the points, A friend of mine had the same problem with a 8n ford and after checking fuel, spark plug wires, coil etc, the new points he put in last fall were too close. I suspect the steel in the point arm heated up with the engine running and bent together more reducing the gap tolerance. BTW is this sweet corn? I suspect he is only one sidedressing corn with cub. Sounds fun. Most farmers around here use some big green things for sidedressing corn.

I think you could have bad spark plugs. Remove the plugs and inspect and make sure they are gapped properly. Make sure you replace the plugs with new ones if the old plugs look bad.

I would install another condenser to see if that's the problem. If it quits again after running for an hour or two, pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within a good ground while someone makes an attempt to start the tractor. You need to do as soon as it quits before the coil has a chance to cool. I'm pretty sure your coil is weak after it warms up. Hal

Had a 140 do similar. Turned out the coil was bad. It would get hot as a fircracker. New coil, no problem.
