Nother problem nother tractor. Have an A. Not sure about the engine. It has a 41 serial number on the tractor and a 47 serial number on the engine and also has a carter carburator. Has been working fine, easy start etc. Now all of a sudden it loses spark and wony start. Mag type. took distributor apart, cleaned up points etc. put back together and started for about a day and now no spark again. Suggestions please. I know little about magnetos.

O.K. I can admitt when Im wrong hehe. Ya they sure do look like man made magnets, not black enough for earth ones. Thats shocking specially for older equipment like that! Early man made mags were very weak compaired to ones made today. I agree. It maybe best to just convert it to eliminate that weak link from the ignition system, as any used ones maybe near the end too.

You can convert your mag to a distributor without removing the mag if you have battery start. Hal

Buy a new inexpensive points & condenser kit. It should include a gap gauge for the points and usually includes a rotor. Make sure the inside of the magneto is clean and dry. Check your spark plugs and the gap, if they look bad, replace them. Make sure you have good plug wires. If this does not solve the problem, you might have a bad coil or magnet. The magnet can be recharged. The coil is not cheap for a magneto.

Good luck.

Are you sure you have those points nice and shiny?
The gap set at .013"? If they are shiny and gapped at .013" I would replace the condenser and then see if there's fire. Pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground while some makes an attempt to start the tractor. I would disconnect the ground wire at the mag for now. I would replace the coil wire too, to make sure its not the problem.

If there's fire now from the coil wire reconnect to it to the cap and check for fire at one of your plugs. If there's no fire you may have a weak coil or your magnets may have lost their magnetism. An easy way to rule out the magnets is to touch them with a flatblade screwdriver and see if they attract that screwdriver with some effort. The magnets are what creates your spark as they pass by the coil. Hal

Id be reeeeally surprised if it were magnets. Specially this kind, I mean usually they are earth magnets. After millions of years being charged up it takes many lifetimes to reverse. EVEN when a opposite polarity is held in range. Man made magnets on the other hand- weaken quickly. Now if they are man made magnets, then they could be dead. Most use good earth mags though.

Here's one off a Twin cylinder garden tractor with
dead magnets. It could be converted to a distributor very easily. Hal
