Mechanical TA- how far would you go?

Bought kind of a basket case 544 row-crop diesel a couple months ago. Got it mostly fixed up to the point where it's field ready. Problem is, the TA slips in direct. Haven't had the cover off yet to see if the TA clutch is soaked in oil, which it very well probably is, but if it's not, I was thinking about just splitting it once and replacing just the TA clutch. My only concern is, that if I remember right, that little TA clutch is quite expensive. Seems like for just a little more $ you could buy a reman unit and be done. Third option would be to rebuild what I've got. Need some opinions from you guys who keep up on the prices of these parts. I've never run into one that was slipping in direct, I've always had to do the complete double split gut out the clutch housing job. No need to consider the cost/time of the labor involved doing the single split vs. double split.

Don't forget the weep hole.

If someone, somewhere along the line has plugged it just to sell a tractor, you could have oil coming forward up the PTO tube and soaking the main clutch.

Pretty unusual for the secondary clutch to slip vs the main clutch; guess you won't know for sure what's going on in there until you open it up and take a peek.

If it were my tractor I would replace the TA unit too when I had it apart. When you get it going the TA will most likelly start slipping in low and you'll have to tear it apart again. A rebuilt TA from Steel Wheel Ranch is in the $400 to $500 range and the clutch is a couple hundred more. I have not seen the clutch and mechcial TA unit offered as a package deal.
