I posted this on the Implement Alley forum without much success in finding informatation about the parts on the HM-221. I have a website set up with pictures of the cultivator as well as the manual. Click on the link below. Anybody seen anything like this that might be able to answer the following questions? *******

I bought an NOS HM-221 cultivator the other day (i.e. steering gangs). Much of it is still wired together in bundles from the factory. It set around in someone's barn for 60 years. The front gangs and tractor mount were assembled by someone. The problem I have is that some of the parts aren't the same as those pictured in the HM-221 manual (publication date 2-25-49 -- 55A).

In the manual, the lift-pipe bracket attaches to the gang coupling head. The gang coupling head that I have has no place to attach the lift-pipe bracket. Also, the manual has a pressure rod and shield strap bracket attached to the gang (the point of attachment of the pressure rods so the cultivator can be raised). My gangs have no such bracket attached nor holes in the gang for one. There are a couple of pieces that came with my cultivator (but not shown in the parts list in the manual) that look like they might be for attachment of the pressure rods, but where in sam hairy do I attach the lift-pipe bracket? Also, the shifting bar is in one piece rather than 2 as in my manual. Were there different versions of the HM-221, and perhaps I have the wrong manual? Or perhaps the front fram assembly is from a different, but similar cultivator (229? 226?)? All the other parts seem to jive with the manual. Any ideas?

Also, the paint on the gangs, shanks, gang clamp, and gang coupling heads is blue. The paint on the main frame angles, rear rock shaft, lift handles, lift pipe, and shields is red. Is this typical? Hugh Mackay? What is the typical color scheme of the 221?

Thanks for any and all help.

With kind regards,

Tony

I think parts of your cultivator may be from a B-221. The B cultivator lifts were mounted to the torque tube in the middle of the tractor, so there were no mounts up front for them. This is my guess, but I have the B-221 manual at home and can check later if you are interested.

John,

That makes sense. I'll bet the B is similar to the C and had touch control hydraulics above the torque tube? If so, there was probably a different mechanism / location for lifting the cultivators. If you happen to come across your manual and confirm that it is a B-221, let me know!

With kind regards and many thanks,

Tony

I'm not sure what to tell you. I also have an HM-221 cultivator, but mine has all the parts just as your parts book shows. I think some how yours is either missing parts, or somebody at one time threw some extra bundles together from different cultivators and now your left with the mess. I will look through my manuals for the 221. I have two manuals, one is early and the other is late. IH did offer the HM-221 to fit other models. I once saw an HM-221 mounted on a Farmall F-12, and another on a Farmall F-20. But the only real differences were in the mounts, every thing else was the same. Also if you want I can email you pictures of my cultivator. As far as paint the frame is red, and the gangs and shovel assembly should be blue. Mine was repainted red at one time but the original paint is showing through in spots. Good luck, Matt.

Matt,

I agree with you that I think the front part of the cultivator is "mix and match" and the rest of it is a standard HM-221 (the rear half is unassembled and still wired together with aluminum lot tags). Funny thing is, that I saw the same gang attachment "knuckles" as mine on an old IH mounted cultivator at Meyer's Implement / Salvage in Elkhart, IN, today (!) But, unfortunately, it was incomplete and I couldn't see how the lift-pipes and brackets attached.

It would be very helpful if you could check your 221 manuals and see if the model changed over the years. I would also very much enjoy seeing pictures of your cultivator. My e-mail is open (aswinehart@hillsdale.edu).

If worse comes to worse, I plan to add a u-bolt to the front frame and attach the lift-pipe bracket to that.

Thanks for your help!

Tony

I sure wouldnt worry about paint as different colors were used other than what the paint guys have written down as we all have read about. I ha ve several cults for the As and B,BN and they arent the same when it comes to paint scheme. I will have to look at my B-221 to see what all the colors are.

Yeah, I found that out when working on the Little Genius. I swear mine had original factory red paint on the clutch mechanism and other parts that were supposed to be blue. Even deep inside and under bolts that I know had never been removed. I decided to go ahead and paint the plow consistent with the paint committee decision primarily because I was worried the "correct Police" would accuse me of being clueless about the paint committee decisions. I have also seen the hubs on the Little Genius vary from factory blue to factory cream in color over the years.

Main thing on the cultivator is that I get it "close enough" or that there is some precendent for whatever color I end up painting it, so I don't get a call from the "correct police" :-)

With kind regards,

Tony
