I went up north and saw a few farmers bailing the grass along the road..... i saw one using an old alis and another using a 544 international... How much is each bale of horse hay worth? im thinking if a guy could get 2 bucks a bale in the winter it would pay to bale up the grass they knock down.... Plus in some spots around here I could cut the ditch as the grass is super tall and it looks like cleen grass that horses like. Any ideas or concerns? i was thinking using my M and a mccormick bailer (with over run coupler). I would even consider making the big squares as its less labor intensive. But alot of small horse farmers like the little ones. is this a good idea or will i lose money? thanx ahead of time.

Looked up the MNDOT web site. Found information regarding Farmer Mowing of highway right-of-way at Link According to the State of Minnesota it is not illegal to harvest hay from the right of way of a highway but may be a misdemeanor if bales are left, equipment is left, or damage is done to the right of way. This does not apply to the Interstate system where it is prohibited unless the District manager deems it of sufficient interest and then it is bid out. Some Counties and Townships may impose other requirements so best to check with the appropriate people. As a rule of thumb here in the southwestern MN area you, the property owner are responsible for the ditch up to the shoulder of the road and maintain the vegetation as you see fit including baling. Know of several people who bale it for their horses without problems. If nothing else sell it to the cattle or goat people.

jonny2006, What you are talking about I call down here in Central Texas is "Beer can Hay" we only feed that when we are recieving fresh cattle that have been on a truck for 12 to 14 hrs. It is just roughage. Something that yearling cattle will pick at for 12 hrs or so, for you want something in their stomach, so the bacteria don't get flushed out with water when the cattle drink in 8 to 12 hrs after thy have gotten of the truck, You have to give them time to settle down after a long truck ride, and stress is rampant in their systems, I do not see how that will work with all the trash in the ditches beside the highway.
Later,
John A.

I take about 1500 bales a year from road ditches and railroad right of way. (1 mile adjoining my land). Gross to me is 3000 dollars for about 180 dollars of diesel and gas. Super H for mow and rake, 966 for baling. Check your state law. Here you 'own' to the center of the road. In fact if you don't mow the ditch the county will do it and BILL you. Just put up 380 bales today. Sold them, and the buyer picks them up. He looked and we settled at 2.25.

Better check your state laws as that is State owned property.

Here, it is totally against the law to hay the road ditches, while up in South Dakota they fight over the grass hay. Go figure.

well back in the 90's we bailed the ditches around dads farm. i think the county said there were no laws against it. I seen them doing it up north in minnesota. I dont think they mind if you just mow the grass and don't damage the signs or the landscape with huge rutts. Anyone know the law in minnesota????? I never seen a cop out here since i moved here other than a barn fire.

I do not know if there any laws in MN, but whenever I go down through southern MN I see one of three things, people baling the ditches along I90, the round bales left behind or the tracks from the process. Ya should still make sure you can do it obviously, but as far as I know its legal in MN.

Hi Allen, the last time I went to Nebraska in the early eighties, farmers were rolling hay on the sides of state roads even. Were they breaking the law, or have the laws changed since then. We went to the southeast corner of the state. Little town named Shickley. Lots of corn there, and some of the nicest folks I ever met.

We own land in three different townships here in MN. One requires a landowner to mow entire ditch, others only top swath of ditch. It's hard to GIVE the mow rights away.

It is illegal to harvest hay from the road here, however the deeds do go to center of road. They don't mind you mowing it, but can't bale it. Even if you could there are to many bottles and other things in the ditch. The state or county mows all roadways around here.
