706 has steer-to-the-right problem

My dad has a 706 that has a steering problem (power steering). He is able to turn the steering wheel (and thus the wheels), to the left, but is unable to turn to the right beyond the center point (wheels pointed straight ahead). The steering wheel refuses to be turned past that point. He must use his brakes to go to the right. Is it possible that it could be something as simple as a hydraulic line plugged or does this sound like something that could be an expensive fix?

Like the other guys said, start out by inspecting the front axle for a mechanical problem. Jack it off of the ground and see if you've got something binding up. If you don't find anything there, I think the next place to look would be the steering valve, which is located on the top of the speed transmission housing on the left side, has a cast iron center with aluminum end caps. Could also very well be a problem inside of the bolster, but I'd tear into the steering valve first because it is much easier to get at. Suppose it could also be in the hand pump if something went majorly wrong.

Will it turn easier that way when going in reverse? Sometimes the thrust bearing on vertical shaft that the axle is attached to (whatever that is called) gets dry and gets rough making it hard to turn in one direction. In your case it would be the left side that is having the problem. hth WaltMo

Could be steering behinf left battery, could be tooth on rack in the front bloster could be the hand pump at steering wheel. The hand pump should slip a little if you hold it at the end of steering, so if it stops to the right at center could be hand pump, if a little slipage at sent I would else ware first. Jack up front end and see if you can turn wheels with a bar, that will tell you if rack is ok.

check the bolts on the lower steering bolster and look to see if one is loose and is backing out. our 706 had a wide front on it, had one do that while i was disking, got to the end of the row, couldnt turn. worth a peek.
