I have not had much luck with paint on the manifold. Is there something that I can put on there to keep it from rusting that will not burn off???

Thomas:

I’ve been wondering the same thing. My current plan is to buy some exhaust manifold coating from J.C. Whitney. The stuff they sell needs to get hot to cure.

Does anyone out there have any experience with the J.C. Whitney stuff or any comments about it?

Hi Tom, when I did mine I cleaned it up the best I could with a wire wheel and painted it with hi temp manifold paint. I bought it at O'rielys but I have since seen it a Walmart. It has been on there for more than 5 years and still looks just like in the photo. I was surprised it worked so well. And I have plowed and also pushed lots of snow with this tractor and it still has not burned off. A neighbor or mine made me a stailess pipe that goes from the muffler to the manifold. It still looks great and I think that pipe would be very hard on paint.

I should have posted this photo. It shows the pipe my neighbor made me.

Yes, VHT is the best product unless you are going to send to someone whom can refurbish cast iron bathtubs/sinks and therefore can porcelain coat it.

Tom, See you are getting info for the manifold. It's been polished but not blasted, knocked off all the horrible original casting flaws and scale. So there is rust in the pores. So bead blast or sand blast to get that out. I used to have access to shot peening which really is the cat's meow, relieves all stresses and makes for ten lifetimes wear. Looks so good you HATE to paint it. No paint on a manifold is forever. But get the rust out and you are way ahead of the game. Use a 'metal prep'on the pipe as it's not cast. Polish as desired priot to that.

This is something that is awsome! DGF (dry graphite film)spray. looks like bare cast iron but is not paint so it can't burn off. you would have to get the manifold red hot to burn this stuff off. You can get it at most NAPA stores. I have used it on race headers, my ol 10-20 manifold, on show car manifolds, and on my WOOD STOVE and it looks great, BUT you will have to reapply it once in a while. It is not water proof so if you wash the tractor you might have to touch it up. I have wasted good money on so called heat proof paint and they all failed miserably, DGF really takes the cake. If you lightly buff it with a rag it gets shiny! Kind of expensive, but a little goes a long way and it should last you for years.
